View Full Version : Any one build a VZ 61 Semi Auto Pistol?

January 17, 2016, 18:45
I was just reading an article about building a semi auto VZ 61 Skorpion and it doesn't look like it is an overly complex build. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it? I've seen that Recon Ordinance has the parts kits and receivers. Seen a few videos like this on the build as well.

I used a RT lower plus a surplus parts kit. Assembly was on the same skill level as an AR lower.

She is a beauty..Just curious, did the receiver come with assembly instructions?

No instructions. There are prints on Web that will help in assembly.

Firearms News(the old Shotgun News) recently had an article on assembling one of these.

You have piqued my interest.

Where can I locate a semi receiver?

Wasn't too complicated - built one back when the receivers were incomplete.

Fun as a posty as well. Skip to 1:36

FWIW its super easy to do these with a finished receiver.

Probably could have taken some more pictures. The hardest part was figuring out how the bolt hold open/mag release parts go together. They all lock each other in to place. Had to hit up a youtube video to figure that one out.

The mods to the original FCG parts for semi-auto only were super easy as well. Two quick dremel operations.

The magazine release needs some fitting. The mags take ALOT of force to get past the release button, looks like ill have to clean up the "angle" of the part. If I push the button in a hair, the mags go in just fine. But pretty straight-forward. The only part I couldnt find was the tiny rivet for the trigger guard, I used a Nail and crushed it in place until I can find the proper rivet.

Debating on the form 1 to put the folding stock on, the receiver I used is drilled and tapped for the "adapter" to put the factory stock back on.

I probably could have bought a commercial/export pistol for a little less than building this one, but wanted one from an issued military kit that showed a little character. The kit I got (all matching numbers, even the cut receiver pieces and stock were from same gun) was probably a 9/10 condition kit. 3 mags. Marked SHE with the crossed swords, made in 1966. Nice, still had most of its bluing and bore was nice. Just filled with grime & stuff from what id imagine was a long time in storge somewhere.

I got the kit and receiver from Recon Ordnance. The kit came with a leather holster for it (huge) and a pouch for the (2) 20 round magazines. Im pretty happy with it. It wasnt cheap, but I dont want to be kicking myself in the ass in twenty years when I can't find one. I ordered the adapter to put the folding stock on it as well, but had it shipped to family out-of-state until I decide whether I want to SBR it, or just leave it alone.

Some more/better pics.

That weird straight up vertical ejection port;

With the stock clipped into front sight (No adapter or way to physically attach to receiver, no funny business)

And size comparison to a Walther P1;

I got mine from Jerry @ Recon Ordnance. Wasn't cheap though.

Hi guys,
for those interested, here you can download hi-res scan of original Vz61 manual issued in 1963, very scarce piece. Original manual has quite unusual A4 size, instead of small A5 book-size how the rest of these type of manuals was printed on.
Here is the link (on the page just click on button with green arrow, then put captcha code and again button below):

Password for zip archive is "rybar" (name of Vz61 chief designer)
