I would like to put a folding stock on a wasr3 (556). I want to keep it an original AK style. I don't want any tapco or AR style folder. Do I need a kit? Where do I find one? Do I need any gunsmithing? thanks for the help in advance

Original Romanian, East German, and, I believe, Polish side folders are a no-gunsmithing, drop-in option. These are all "wire" type right-side folding stocks, basically identical in appearance. They are all east block mil-spec AK folding stocks. They do not interfere with the factory optics rail so you can have an optic mounted and still fold your stock. I've got the East German for my SAR-2. I think it is more reinforced where it goes into the back of the receiver than the Romanian folder. Not as comfortable as the Chinese side folders or the AK74 side folders. More streamlined than any underfolder though.

I have one on my WASR. The stock locks open easily and firmly--it takes a hard smack to unlock it for folding, but that's better than it folding up while shooting. The stock was a very tight fit on my rifle--I had to slam it hard against the floor several times to get it to seat all the way, so I know it won't fall off. :)

I clicked on the link--I'm glad I got mine; those things seem to have become very popular!

These work great, original, but wow, the prices have gone nuts on these!

I paid 29.00 for a couple of sets when they came out, guess it has been a while!

Well,

Those AKM wire folding stocks suck HUGE. Everytime I shot my SAR 1 I bruised my face and it left a black and blue line on my cheek. Went with a much more functional magpul folding AK stock that has adjustable LOP for use with body armor.

You dont need a kit or any gunsmithing.

AK files marketplace, akforum.net marketplace, or this mp are the only place to find a proper romanian wirefolder.

As others have posted, you can pay more for german or polish, but be warned, some of those require a specific rear trunion with a forward cross support that is pivoted against for the push button release mechanism to work properly. I tried to use a polish wirefolder on a saiga and couldnt cause the rear trunnion wouldnt support the push button lever properly.

Romanians tend to be the cheapest ~$70-75 shipped and are the simplest to install, so Id just watch the mp's and wait for your opportunity.
