Has anyone ever applied Brownells baking laquer or alumahyde 2
over the painted finish on an Imbel kit?

I just bought a grade 1 from Dan's and its real nice, except for some minor scratches on the exposed part of the barrel and lower. Just wondering if it would lift?
Thanks ,RJ

I put some Brownell's baking laquer over one of my Dan's Imbel kits. I scuffed it up a little (the old finish) with emory cloth, cleaned it well, then sprayed and baked. It turned out really nice (dark gray type). But almost all the original finish was still on when I sprayed it. Turned out good, nice and even finish.

You might look at something cheaper than Brownells. I got some 'Dupli-Color, High Heat with Ceramic, 1200 degree' Black paint from 'O'reilly's Auto parts' for $6.00 a can. After spraying you bake it at 450 degrees for 2 hours and it's tough to.

I painted up some rough looking mags and they came out great, also painted the barrel on my Imbel kit and it to looks good.

Aif:

Can U tell me...
1. What did you do to prepare the mag bodies before painting?

2. How many coats did you do?

3. Did you bake between each coat?

Thanks

Here's the answers for you:

1. I sanded with light sand paper to rough up the surface and a 3M green pad to remove rust on bear surfaces. Then cleaned them off with Dawn to degrease.

2. Spray them with one coat and make sure they are covered, you can let it dry a couple minutes and hit it again if needed.

3. only need to bake it once. I roughed up the barrel with light sand paper leaving most of the original finish and painted over the top.

It comes out with kind of a satin black finish similar to the original.
CAUTION: Make sure you have a good vent! Lots of smoke during baking. If your using the kitchen stove make sure the wife is gone for a few hours! :D

Aif, those finish looks good. I was wondering if you use the same finish on your G1 lower to match your Entreprise upper I saw on one of your posts?

Does the stuff stink or does it just smoke? Maybe I should use my BBQ grill for it...
