This is Part2. Part one is about the FAMAS F1 and the Brits's there L85A1.
You can find it here: http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=388336

The Steyr AUG's...
I received 2 different AUG's.
The heavy barrel came with 2 shorter barrels. The other one is the regular AUGA1
The HB had a little bit use, the other one was unfired.

Lets start with the shorty.

It is my favorite bullpup. Loading the mags is easy. You can see how many rounds you have. Digits on the mags make it even more accurate.
Loading the mags is still not natural. Cocking however is more natural since it happens at you nose and at the correct side. You can hold the bolt open by move it to the right.
The Steyr's uses an intergrated scope. The scope has a transparant bikini. Best to remove in the field since the optics get blurry with the bikini on.

The optics uses a cross+hollow dot combination. The dot has a large diameter. It is lager as the black circles of a pistoltarget at 50 meters. Means the size of 2 heads at 100meters.
It would be better to put a point in the middle...

You see less as the L85 SUSAT scope...

The HEAVY BARREL AUG A1
Well, it is indeed more heavy. The barrel has a bipod (hard to flip open) and a different flashhider.
I could only test it with the bipod open. The bullets made a string instead of a group. Since there is nearly no elevation possible i had trouble to shoot at my targets. So i needed to shift the pressure on the barrel and bipod since the magazinefloor was touching the ground. Shiffiting the pressure means your barrel is bending more or less...
I'll bet it helps if you fire from a range bag.

Note the oval string group. The trigger was ok but moves to the rear, it doesn't pivote like an AR15 trigger.

This AUG was the only rifle that jammed. First the gasplug was set on grenades, so it didn't cycle.
Then i had a double feed.

Note the lack off hight when the mag rests on the ground. you could make the bipod longer but you expose yourself a lot!

Note the cones on the ground from the blast! J M Browning saw that to and made the first semi automatic rifles after he saw this phenomenon!

Paco,

so which bullpup do you like the best ?

I've only had the chance to test the Tavor and the AUG A3.

For me the gun to get was the AUG.

I've had my A3 since July of 2013 and I love it, but my #1 battle rifle is the FN Pata FAL 50.63.

Shot an AUG a long time ago when they were hip. Not a bad weapon, but waaaay overpriced.

I would go to war with the AUG...
But, for real, i take my FN FNC with me

I would use my AUG as an "urban carbine" with the short 16" barrel, and my Para FAL 50.63 as an "open country" gun.

Is your AUG heavy barrel full-auto? My friend has several FA AUGs here in the US including the heavy barrel. It fires from open bolt...

I've got an unfired AUG USR and one day I may shoot it....

All my guns are Full auto or burst. No problem.
The AUG with the long barrel fires with closed bolt. It is not the supportversion LMG that fires openbolt.

On my way to Somlia in 92-93, i was in Djibouti, the French have there REP troops over there. Tough guy's, dirty town and 2 million hookers or so.
These foreign warriors didn't like there FAMAS much.
To noisy, the lack of firepower and complex handlings at night made it not a winner. But hey, they got to live with it.

Ok Capt Paco, First off you have two Aug A'1'S. Both don't have the roller on top of the bolt carrier in the back which was a product improvement on the A2 Aug's. Also, The firing pin doesn't have a spring going through the firing pin., It was a floating design back then. The A1 Aug's in the USA that were imported and the ones that were converted from semi-auto trigger packs to full-Auto were night mares to fix as allot of manufactures back in the 1980's really didn't know how to convert semi-auto's trigger packs to F/A to begin with.

Now to cure your problem with the Bolt carrier you'll need an A2 Aug bolt carreir with the roller on top of the back and the A2 Aug firing pin and spring, That will cure your jamming problems. I had a Full-Auto Aug A1 and sold it 5 years ago, Wish I hadn't now as they are selling for 18K when they do come up for sale. I did the product improvement on mine with the A2 upgrades on the bolt carrier and firing pin/spring and never had a JAM again. Before the improvements it would jam or send brass into the ejection port side lip and get stuck in the plactic of the ejection port and then the next round would hit the stuck piece of brass and smack me in the face hard, After having that happen twice i e-mailed steyr in Austria and they recommended the A2 upgrades and when I got the new A2 parts installed it never happened again.

Just one thing, NEVER EVER TOUCH THE METAL OF THE SCOPE OR RECEIVER AFTER FIRING SAY 100 OR MORE ROUNDS, OR YOU WILL GET TO KNOW WHAT 2ND DEGREE BURNS FEEL LIKE. OUCH! My friend did after I had already told him not to touch the metal after firing in F/A and he DIDN'T listen at all and we had to take him to the hospital with 2nd degree burns to his hand. SO, Keep hands on PLASTIC AT ALL TIMES UNTIL THE METAL COOLS DOWN ENOUGH to take off the line.

My Full-auto Aug had all the barrels', 14 1/2 inch, 16 inch, 20 inch and 24 inch Heavy barrel with bipod, Also had the 30 rnd,42 rnd and 100 rnd Beta mags.

I still MIGHT have a A2 Aug Bolt carrier with roller and A2 Firing pin/Spring as extra's, If I find them maybe we do some trading of parts. Lee.

It sucks...
It looks perhaps cool but it is not so practical.

Only the 40mm is cool is they change those plastic sights. They break if you look at it. Hard to fix a failure inside a F2000!

Hey Paco,
Why does the F2000 suck? Fragile?

As soon as it jams it is very hard to get a round/shell out off the chamberopening. You need to lift a small hatch and there is no room.
At night you can forget it completely.

Also, our first F2000 didn't came with optics. only those emergency sights.
The sights of the launcher are a plastic joke. They hook on trees/leaf and snap off easy.
The trigger was crispy and heavy. The gun is bulky.
Boy, please, just give me an old school FNC...

It is like a SPAS12, it looks cool but in not the best chooise. Take a Styer AUG or so

Worth noting that the AUGs supplied to the Irish Defence Forces have an 'ALO' automatic lock out, fitted to the underside of the trigger which prevents the rifle being fired in fully auto unless the firer presses it back into its recess, I believe the Australian F88 has the same feature.

Firing full auto in a lot of cases is just a waste of ammo. Most of the average Joes got trouble controlling a weapon on full auto, especially when using intermediate or rifle ammo.

Submachine guns are a different matter, as those use pistol ammo.

So, after several testingsessions with the British L85, the French FAMAS A1 and the STEYR's i came to a conlusion. If i lived in the 80's, i would go for the STEYR AUG A1. Why?
Here it is...

Accuracy: The FAMAS fired the tightest groups, Then the AUG and then the L85.

Sights: The L85 SUSAT gave the clearest sight. (it's ironsights sux) Then the AUG and last the FAMAS since it only has iron sights. (however, they work)

Fastest shots on target CQB (30yd): FAMAS, AUG, L85
Fastest shots on 120yd: AUG, L85, FAMAS

Fastest follow up shot. AUG, L85, FAMAS (jumps serious off sights)

Controlability in fast semi: AUG, L85, FAMAS ( Both L85 and FAMAS walk away)

Controlability in Full auto: AUG, L85, FAMAS ( FAMAS is insane)

Handlings in general: AUG, L85, FAMAS (both L85 and FAMAS are complex, just plain stupid)

Reloadingcycle: FAMAS, AUG, L85 (L85 bothrelease is el-cheapo style)

Field maintenance: AUG FAMAS L85
Detailed maintenance AUG L85 FAMAS (the FAMAS has incredible small parts that you can loose in the field.

So, No merci for the F1 FAMAS : only 25 rounds, no optics (then), dirt slides in since the lower is wider as the upper. Stupid safety in the triggerguard, loud and noisy, 32 combiniations for ranging a grenade? No gassettings, it's a kind of blowback. little parts inside. It hurts to handle, to little place between mag and pistolgrip. Lines up fast at close range.

So, No thanks for the British L85. How did this one ever passed trials? Mags bend in your hand. Magrelease on the leftside, bouncing against you webbing, bye bye mags... Desintegrating plastics. Tiny heatshield. rubber eyecap on the susat bang in to your eye. Jams often. noisy and cheap design. Handlings are not so comfy. Not easy to line up fast. Best trigger...

I'm gonna fight if i have to with the AUG. but, it needs some good oil to function. The donuts makes it hard to pinpoint a small target. The safey hurts. The fullauto trigger is odd, just squize harder to make it rock and roll?
Strange... It stay's well on sight but all iron parts get f%cking hot!
But, hey, it works, its easy, it's "kampfsicher" and foolproof (idiotensicher)

Complex handling? No shit sherlock. The zero on the selector dousn't mean SAFE, it means FULL AUTO, comprix?

This sucks and is not safe to switch with gloves on. It also selects semi, safe and a kind of full auto you had selected with that other selector, got it?

The L85 was absolutely mint when i got it. It started to desintergrate by taking it out of the gunbag, FUBAR!
Some later the front iron sight came loose...

The front handguard gets serious dirty, it is made of thin sheet metal and bends in a second.

Don't charge the cockinghandle at full speed if the dustcover is still up. You break a finger or the dustcover...

I recently found out i had 3 types trigger packs. semi, full and a selective 3-FA. The burst is odd, bang--bangbang... From left to right FA- Burst+FA - semipack

Nothing bad to say about the AUG, yes, the safety hurts in the SAFE position, dat is 99% of your duty time...

Take a small file to the AUG safety and chamfer the edges and corners. The safety will be much more comfortable.

Sure this has been covered but whats the process for getting a FA in your country ?

There is like 100 or so semi auto FAMAS in the USA right now early 80s imports last two sold for 10k and 11k and were Semi

And other then a few dealer only guns I have not even seen a L85 here

Nice guns man .. Very cool collection and nice right up

If I lived in the 80s...I'd go for an Ak. These military rifles (except maybe the AUG) seemed to suscribe the the opposite philosophy of the Kalashnikov.

I go for my FNC, it is a Kalash deluxe with good sights...
Not only in the 80's, even now it is a good rifle that works always

Nope, no new HG or cheekpiece yet. Buzzy moving my house...
Yep, we got tavors here, you can buy'm in Belgium.
No, i'm not a fan. Jumps high of the target.
Making 223 rifles to small or to short is not helping to make'm controlable.
Working on to get a IMI Negev. Looks great...

PACO:

I have been told that the plastic handguard, cheek piece etc made for the replica Airsoft L-85 is better quality than the issued military parts.

Worth looking into it.

Cheers.

that can't be so hard... My cheeck piece fell off just like that without a shot.

I got a confirmation that i will do a reading on bullpups in the royal military school in Brussels for the Belgian gun collectors association (www.bvvw.be).
I think i quote the airsoft joke.
