cushe, the proper way to drill the gas port is to drill through the gas block without disassembling the block. Do, however, disassemble the gas system, and remove the gas tube to keep metal out. Check the search on drilling gas port, some very good and entertaining info on the how to. Some drill, some ream. Whatever, be careful and go slow. Also, don't go too big too fast. remember, you can't put metal back.

Cushe hold on a minute there. You CANNOT drill straight through a L1A1 gas block. The exit portion is at an angle into the block and the hole in the bbl is verticle at the 12 o'clock position. So the first step might be drill out the GB some and check to see if that helps before removing the font sight and drilling out the bbl.

The gas port hole runs from the top front area of gas regulator in a forward and down angle all the way into the barrel.
All that is necessary to remove to drill the port is the gas plug, piston and spring.

If your just going to port a little, turn the regulator to the big open notch, otherwise take off the H-grds, pop the regulator keeper wire clip off from behind the regulator then slide the reg back out of the way.
