View Full Version : PSL finally done!

This is one of the very first PSL parts kits to come into the country. It has a threaded muzzle and bayonet lug, and is all matching numbered. I bought it from Centerfire in 2003 (IIRC) and it took quite awhile to find a receiver for it, which I finally did here on the Files. I bought a Red Star Arms 2 stage trigger for it, and I finally found a guy in Eastern Washington to put it together for me. Mark Tucker of Coyote Gulch Armory. I'm not sure if he is still even in the business any more. Had issues with the scope rail – it was way out of spec. I think I finally found a fix to that by substituting an M6 x 40MM bolt for the clamp, then double nutting the bottom (suggested on another gunboard). It has always shot fairly well, but I could never get the scope as tight as I wanted it. We will see when I go to the range. Looks kind of mickey mouse, but it's experimental still.
I bought the Rhineland Arms left handed stock set (I shoot left handed) in Tiger Maple. I wasn't trying for a Dragunov look, I just wanted it to be easier for me to shoot. I packed that around for years before finally getting around to putting it on. The lower forearm needed quite a bit of Dremel work to get it fit around the barrel. When I fit the buttstock, another issue came up. The Rhineland Arms buttstock has two screws that come in from above to affix it to the receiver. My rear trunnion only had one hole, as a stock PSL uses another bolt coming up through the handgrip from the bottom. Asked Gunplumber about it, and he informed me that most of the rear trunnions being used for PSLs are not the correct ones (RPK, IIRC), and that is my trunnion had only one hole and the buttstock had two. So I loaded it up and took it to Gunplumber to have another hole drilled. I didn't want to botch it myself. While it was there, he refinished it (blacked out). I'm not sure which finish he used, but it is beautiful. I'm going to guess METACOL III Satin Black. He also refinished the stock flashider and the Nodak 'Tabuk' hider it wears now. He left the pivot pins and the rear sight leaf in park, and they contrast extremely well with the black coating. He also painted in the numbering on the rear sight leaf. He also milled part of the Tabuk FH down, so that it would time with the spring loaded pin in the FSB.
I used Minwax 'Gunstock' stain on the furniture, about 4 coats. Then started with TruOil, buffing with 0000 steel wool in between. It ended up with 4 coats of TruOil on it. I was going to dull it, but when I saw how it looked I figured I would put it back together as is. I figure I can dull it later if I don't like it.
I'm curious as to what the recoil will be like, now that the spring loaded PSL buttstock is gone.
I want to take it to the range today to shoot it, but here's where I ran in to yet another problem. The longest case I have is 47”, and it's almost 50”. Ben Avery requires it to be cased to come to the range, so I guess I will go to Sportsman’s today and get a case. I've got about 700 rounds of Czech silver tip light ball, but I've been shooting the Wolf non corrosive 148gr stuff, which it was shooting fairly well. I also bought Hornady 150gr SST and PPU 150gr SPBT to try in it. My plan is to use this for deer and dogs when I get moved back to Oregon. I don't know if I would trust a 150gr bullet on elk, and as you all know, it's the limit because of rear trunnion damage with the PSL. I still have to come up with a way of limiting the magazine capacity.
I ordered an SVD sling and a 42MM POSP scope cover for it from Kalinka Optics. It's the one that covers the scope while it is mounted on the rifle, and affixes with a leather strap around the bottom. As per usual with my luck, this was before I read all the horror stories about their terrible shipping times. Most of them were posted about 10 years ago, so I have my fingers crossed.
It's not a high dollar gun, but in my opinion one of the best things about Mark is he treats all of them like they are. Thanks again GP.

Nice job andy! Awaiting to hear a range report.
I have a Romak III, that I bought NIB from CAI in '00. It's a factory build import and looks great but not as accurate as any of the rest E-block rifles I have. Using milsurp bulgarian & russian ammo. I'll put it in the same league as my 188 series Mini 14. Some days she shoots better than others. I just can't bring myself to get rid of her though.

I hope yours shoots better.

She looks beautiful:bow:

Thank you very much. Whatever you do do not get rid of the PSL. Look way down the road, I really believe they will be worth way more than now.

Interested in the scope rail mod. My PSL rail is out of spec too, scope works loose every time I take it out.

I think it's going to work really good. If you need any other pictures of it, please let me know.
