They have slant back Veprs in 308, 223, 5.45 in stock again at very reasonable prices for something banned! Is the ban real?

Ya the ban is real. I think SO MANY were on order and paid for that they are still coming through. Anything already paid for is allowed to come in. At least that's how I understood it.

I'm interested in 7.62x54R and 8mm versions.

The thumbhole stock is actually pretty comfortable for a left handed shooter.

Not typically. That's why there were so many Poly kits after the 1989 and 1994 bans. They had to part out whole guns that were on the boat when the ban hit.

I tend to think these Veprs are old stock. They have square back receivers available and I bought them a year ago, I can't imaging what they want to bring in slant back on new orders.

My understanding is all Veprs are normally slant back, but Molot did a short run of squarebacks for the American market, then discontinued them. So they're back to "normal" now.

Aim surplus has the 20" barrel 7.62x54R model in stock. I need one like I need a hole in my head but just could not stand it and now have one on order. Hope to use it with my buddy hog hunting. The 54R hog hammer! Will need to find a scope mount not offset to the left that I can put some glass on and it's on like donkey kong! Whoooo hooooo!

This deal isnt really a ban. Its economic sanctions that happen to target kalashnikov concerns. And it does target veprs, cause regardless of molot vs ishvesk, they are both producing commercial rifles for export by KC. The veprs that are for sale are ones that had been bought and paid for by importers who arent subject to the sanctions. If the transaction was completed, so the rifles werent owned by KC, at the time the sanctions went into effect, they are cleared for entry. The only producer over there who has escaped sanctions is barnaul, which is why bear and wolf ammo havent dried up a bit.

I read on AKfiles that Molot isn't affected. Which is why Veprs are still coming in and the prices aren't crazy or being touted as "banned" by all the retailers.

I'm not saying that this is gospel. But if there were no more to be had after the suppliers had exhausted their supply of paid for rifles, wouldn't they be jacking the prices up and advertising that "you better buy this NOW"?

Alot of them do exactly that, but six plus months later, that song and dance is getting old.

Before the sanctions, back in November 1997, Russia and the USA had come to a trade agreement where Soviet-era defense-related sanctions were lifted but only certain civilians firearms were allowed to be imported.

The allowed firearm list (part of the amendments to 27 CFR 47.52) included historic weapons, such as the Mosin Nagant, and guns manufactured by Izhmash, Molot, Tula (Tulsky Oruzheiny Zavod / TOZ) and Baikal (Izhevsky Mekhanichesky Zavod / IZH). Since then Izhmash took control of Molot through legal action and later merged with Baikal/IZH and became Concern Kalashnikov.

- See more at: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/07/18/russian-guns-can-still-legally-imported/#sthash.fJTBBasr.dpuf

Plain and simple, if KC is involved then its subject to the sanctions. Last I checked, KC is exporting both molot and saiga. A quick check of saigas on gb shows sub-600 unconverted rifles not selling, so the same dynamic is there.

Neither are commanding the panic pricing of six months ago. I think both spiked for a bit after news of the sanctions and both have settled into pricing about 15-20% higher than before. Vepr 54r rifles are at their cheapest since the sanctions at 850. They will sell out quick at that price I think. I bought a v2 before for 550, so its all relative.

I could ruminate more on why this is so, but...I wont.

Just wanted a semi-auto to complement the bolt guns in 54r and 8mm.
Would rather a VEPR design in 8mm than a Hakim or FN49.
Right now 54r is cheap again so I am stacking.

Took delivery of my Vepr hog hammer yesterday. Will be testing this evening with some Yugo milsurp.
Initial inspection is good. Rifle feels light and handy to me. The right hand thumbhole stock is actually comfortable in a left hand position.

I have a question---is there a scope mount that centers over the receiver?
Obviously as a lefty the standard left offset mount is a no-go.

Will post some pics later. Thanks!

Went to the range with it last Friday. I REALLY like this rifle. Easy to shoot well and I can actually use these iron sights, they are more visible than any other rifle I have with a similar system. Weak point is the mags. Suffered one FTE stovepipe I think is mag related, no other failures. Recoil sitting at the bench is negligible, offhand it is more pronounced but will allow extended range sessions without discomfort.

Range trip pics. Warmed up with the AR's, then got out the hammer. I don't remember now maybe the fourth or fifth mag was when the FTE occurred.

Took a photo of the FTE. There was one round left in the mag. The was the only failure. Went thru 60 rounds of surplus Yugo 7.62X54r, five rounds at a time.

It's a Black Horse Arsenal handguard... and yes, at the present time I am still using the OEM 5Mx0.5 handguard screw. I've located two replacement screws/bolts which will much improve the handguard's ergonomics.... but locating the 'fine thread' 5M screw was more difficult than finding hen's teeth.

Military Arms Channel did a video in early May comparing accuracy of a Norinko SVD (beautiful rifle by the way), a Romanian PSL and the Vepr using Hornaday Vintage Match 174gn BTHP. Very low round count in the comparison but less than 1/2 in variance in 3 shot groups across all rifles.

I have a .308 Vepr coming soon from Tywest here on the files. I'll post a range report as soon I can get her shot.

You can buy a 5mm fine thread die on ebay for $5 shipped and make your own screw. That is what I did for both of my Veprs. Some folks tap the fine threads to next larger size, I prefer to leave it factory until I have to.

My 2 Vepr 308s shoot as well as my Norinco M14 and my FAL. Soft recoil and accurate. I have both scoped. I also have a Zastava M77 308, somehow I feel Zastava recoil is sharper than my Veprs. I haven't played with Zastava gas setting yet. It is on 2 right now. Not sure I should open the gas or reduce it to get softer! I bought the Zastava for the adjustable gas system, it is cheaper than Vepr also.

That's how a caveman would do it (congrats if that's what you were going for). Your final product (the re-threaded screw) I'm sure is slightly jacked-up. Cutting existing "course" threads down to "fine" threads (which is what 0.5 is) cannot be adequately performed by the average garage mechanic or hobbyist. But hey, I'm sure you got the square peg to fit into that round hole, just fine! As for me.... I'll find the right tool (in this case, part) to perform the job. This forend handguard screw is the sole metal fixture point keeping the handguard in place, while also on occasion undergoing stress when the rifle is being carried by sling. So, simply making do with a hatchet job.... well, more power to ya I suppose.

HankC
June 28, 2015, 06:34
Well, the "Cavemen" simply try to find alternate solutions while the 5mm fine thread screw is almost impossible to find in US. Wish your factory screw last forever, otherwise, you may be joining the "Caveman" club! By the way, I made my screws from grade 8 stock, not rethread a course 5mm screw. If you have some mechanical knowledge or ever try rethreading from fine to course or course to fine, you know it is very stupid to even think of doing it, even for a Caveman!
