I passed up a really nice one about two years ago so when I saw this one at the gun show today I had to have it. I tried to convince the dealer the dried cosmoline in the bore was rust but it didn't work. Just kidding but it did look like rust until he ran a patch through it.
It's a Izhevsk 1943 wartime model with a M44 stock but it has all matching numbers and a mirror bright bore. Here it is next to it's taller brother also a 1943 Izhevsk.

My M38 has the rear sight and serial number filled in with red paint or something. I have searched but no one seems to why some were filled in with red and most others were not.
Does anyone here have any idea why some were filled with red paint?

red paint is a wax poison for the special operator of that rifle to lick off in case he was caught....

I read it on the Internet

Yeah, I read that also but I doubt it's true. I'm not going to lick my rifle to find out either. I believe some vendor made that up just so he could up his prices.

I like my Mosins in their original stocks but that would be nice on one of those beat up Chinese type 53s.

You'll like it - mine was counterbored at the muzzie and I just had to mess with it a bit.

Started out with a scout scope and riser

then it got out of hand

Silencer on a M38? You took away half the fun of shooting it, lol.
I like it though.

I finally shot my M38 today. It has been drizzling rain all day but I went down to my shooting spot anyway. I've been shooting shotguns and rifles all my life but this thing KICKS, the only thing I have close to it is a single shot H&R shotgun with 00 buckshot. Conditions were bad but I could still punch holes in a gallon jug at 100 yards shooting off hand.
I still can't wait for a good day to shoot it again and see what it will really do.

Congrats on the "short rifle" find. They are an ass kicking hoot to shoot. I just sold my M44 to a friend of my son that is starting a collection. So far he has a Yugo, Polish and my Russian m44.

Personally I think that Archangel stock is an abomination. If you want to own a real no bullshit match/target Mosin let me know. I'm thinning out my collection and would part with this for the right price.

Oh, don't worry the can screws off - just got tired of my friends picking up
their toys and moving two benches over when I shot it without the can.

my friend just got this Remington 700 back after being shortened

most of the one out of the cluster were from adjusting the sights.
