I have a 870 Remington express magnum, and Im a sucker for overkill !! I want to put a barrel on it with a 31/2 inch chamber, is this a safe swap??, I know, don't say it, I know its got more than enough power as is, and its a waste of money, but I cant help myself?!?

You can use the 3 1/2 inch barrel but you still have to use 3 inch shells. Remington sent me a 3 I/2 inch barrel by mistake (it was free) and when I called them about it they told me it would work but wouldn't function with 3 1/2 shells.

The Super Mag 870 receiver will cycle 3-1/2 " shells because the receiver is longer.

The standard 870 receiver will accept 2-3/4 ", or 3 ", or both depending on the ejector placement.

A Super Mag barrel on a standard receiver will usually be a one shot wonder.

You get 3-1/2 guesses why that may be...

The super Mag barrel will work on the standard receiver but not with 3 1/2 inch shells.

I'm not sure the receivers are different lengths. I think it's the length of the ejection port. At least that's what I was told.
I'll have to compare my 870's when I get a chance, and see if the receivers vary in length. I've owned probably a dozen 870's and never noticed if one was longer then another.
So, are you saying that whenever you jump up a size in shotshell, they made longer receivers, even going from 2 3/4" to 3", and again from 3" to 3 1/2"?

No.

For the 3 inch Magnum, the ejector was moved back, using the same rivet position in the left side of the receiver. You can remove the rivets in a standard 870, install a magnum ejector assembly, and 3 inch shells will eject properly.

I would think that opening up the ejection port would do it, I think??

Yes !

Grab that dremel, 4 carbide cutters and a sanding drum, and cut 1/2 inch forward in to the barrel, making sure to smooth the edges so a bluing pen will make it look all pretty.

After you fire it, I will give you $ 48.50 for the usable parts left over.

You cover shipping.

Correct. And a lot of the standard 870s are coming through with a super mag barrel from the factory.
