So what was too difficult to make a "commercially viable" shotgun suppressor in the past?

They been doing it in Europe for years - I think that most people just were not willing to pay the $200 tax stamp and endure the wait. People are buying more suppressors now then at any time in the past, and some don't seem to care about the prices too much

What earthly purpose would it serve to have that big clunky thing on the end of your shotgun?

A 50-cent pair of foamie earplugs takes care of all the sound mitigation needs for any event where I can think of that involves firing lots of rounds from a shotgun.

Makes the neighbors happy and doesn't scare the other critter's as much

No one was left alive to tell about them.

They have made SOUND MODERATORS in Europe for years for virtually every firearm known to man.

Silencerco had a shotgun suppressor several years ago, although they were not very popular.

And don't forget the redjacket shotgun suppressor.
