I'm building a customizing a deer rifle for my neighbor's 10 year old son. It is a
Savage 110 in .243 and pretty old. Recessed bolt head makes it pre-1967. Used to be nice bluing and has the swell for where the rear sight was (now has a Marble insert).

Where the front sight used to be, is a long oval slot of two different widths. The narrower front portion is dovetailed. Apparently, the sight drops in the rear portion, then slides forward, and is then retained by . . . something. I am not familiar with this type of front sight. Does anyone have a picture of
one, or the sight itself?

I'm haven't decided if I should cut the barrel back 2", fill the slot, or replace the sight with one I fabricate or maybe can find.

Most photos on the web have no front sight or are of the receiver area only.
