Looks like a bunch of S&W 681's are being imported from the Federal Police in the land down under. The one's I've seen pics of look pretty good. Imported by CAI.

Who has 681's?

Good to know. I would prefer adj. sights, but they generally shoot to POA with 147gr Win or most 158gr loads.

Try to get one that's had the Bushing mod done. They will be marked with an "M" in the crane area. If I remember right, it was only some lots of Federal Mag ammo that caused a problem with primer flow back.

Good six guns!

When did used revolvers break the $200 price barrier? Did I miss something?

When it says Smurf & Wuzzie on it, or Cult for that matter.

Hopefully they'll drop in price.
I'd like to hear about their past lives though.

If I'd been quicker on the trigger I'd of bought Gary's 686 a few weeks back....

At one time I owned both a Model 681 and a 686. The 686 was purchased first. Bought it for my birthday present back in Nov 1983. A six inch piece with the red ramp front sight and the white outline rear sight. It has the semi target hammer and a smooth combat trigger. Paid about $300 for it back then. Still have it sitting in the safe and every so often I take it out to the club range for a workout. I received notification from S&W that I should return the 686 for the upgrade mod but I decided not to. It is my understanding that the problem had to do with Winchester .357 Magnum 145 grain Silvertip ammo. Since I shoot nothing but my own handloads in .357 I took a pass.

A co worker at the federal prison I worked at had a four inch Model 681 that he offered to me at a very good price. Complete with box and a Bucheimer holster for only $200. He didn't like it for some reason. I took the 681 to a local gunsmith and had him slick up the double action trigger pull. The end result was a DA trigger that reminded me of my pre war 38/44 Outdoorsman.

A year after I retired from the BOP I ended up selling the 681 to a shooter who just had to have it. So he and I went to my favorite FFL dealer and did a legal transfer. I pocketed $400 which I put down as a partial payment on a new S&W Model 696 .44 Special. Sometime later I saw the 681 again. It had been turned into a PPC gun with a six inch barrel about one inch in diameter and sported a Bomar Rib set of sights. A nice setup for that style of shooting but just about useless for anything else IMHO.

I haven't seen another 681 in over 20 years of going to gun shows and prowling around this state's gun dealers. Those who have them must be keeping them.....

And so it goes.

Adjustable sights seem like a liability on many carry guns, but S&W's seem very unobtrusive and hard to damage, IMO. Enough so that I wouldn't own any that didn't have them other than a J-frame. $539 for these are nuts, IMO.

First I have heard of AFP issuing 681s, they issued Mod 10s and Mod 36s then Glock 17s and then 22s (plus 19s and 23s etc).

They *may* be ex-APS (Australian Protective Services) but given the age of a no dash 681 (1980s) I very much doubt this. APS became part of AFP in the last 5 plus years but prior they also carried Mod10s then some USPs and then Glocks.

One agency had 586s (6 inch) they some 686s (4 inch) but I am 100% that they did not originate there nor did they EVER issue 681s.

Victoria Police and South Australian Police both did a deal with S&W to trade in Model 10s, Mod 36s and Model 66s but they all went DIRECT to S&W and returned to the US market without any new import markings.

Just another conformation of the old saying: "buy the gun, not the story".;) And I still don't see anywhere near $539 plus shipping and transfer on one of these.
