Picked up a Win M54 today. Got good trade for a old Rem 700. Bore looked a little dark but when I cleaned it, it has a nice shine. The guy had the action drilled for a scope and had the bolt reworked to go better with the scope. Collector value is mostly gone but it will make a good shooter. Another old Winchester for the vault.

The 54's were smooooth operating rifles. Is yours one of the more common calibers? They were chambered in some unusual offerings, .22 Hornet, .30-30, .257 Roberts, and 9MM Mauser were some of them.

The barrel is marked 30GOV'T06. (30-06). I have wanted one for a while, just could not find one for a price I was willing to pay. Nice thing is, it uses the same stripper clips has my 03A3's. Trying to find the proper peep sight. I modified a peep I have from a Marlin 1895 45-70 I no longer have. Fits the holes drilled for the scope mounts. I checked the serial number. Shows it was made in 1930.

I like them 30-06's. Mine is a Win. Mod. 70, pre-64, standard and built 20 years after yours in 1950.
I think I've seen a couple more 06's around the place.

The majority of model 54's I've seen for sale have been .270's. Nothing wrong with them, just not a caliber I get excited about.
I did once see a M54 in .22 Hornet and with an $1800 tag hanging from it.

For the M54 with standard barrels, Lyman No.48 WJ or a Redfield 70 WH are correct. Garry Fellers in Ft. worth might have one, Have his phone number if you want.

I see 54's for sale less and less these days. Good catch you made in my estimation.

What an wonderful snag that rifle is... the metal looks good and the wood rates at about "WonderfuL", a truly nice piece of walnut! Enjoy!

The M54 appears to be based on the Springfield 1903 type action. Since it has been drilled for scope mounts, I took an extra 1903A3 sight and fit it to these holes. Looks like it is going to match up ok with front sight. Hopefully I can get out and try it later today.
