Does anyone own a gun from or know anything about American Western Arms? A local gun store has a Peacekeeper in .357 Mag for $600. It has the look and feel of a Colt SAA at half the price. I just wanted to know if the quality was as good as it seems.

Thanks for your help,
Justin

I bought an AWA years ago when Colt SAA's were extremely hard to find. The gun looked good, IIRC it was color cased hardened, and functioned well enough. To be honest I am a Colt snob so I was never happy with the AWA and I traded it off as soon as I found the Colt I was looking for. For the price you mentioned, I would first consider a Ruger or US Firearms if available. I am not certain, but I believe AWA is no longer in business.

Their website works fine as of today http://www.awaguns.com/

Seems high for a used gun, with lots of Ital imports available for much less. If quality is your fist issue, then do go with a Colt as only a Colt is a Colt. If shooting fun is first up, I would look for the Ital version which you could likely find for half that amount or just a little more at any gunshow.

I agree with the other two fellers! The price is too high. Is it new? AWA is not highly rated in the Colt clone world. Uberti makes most of the better ones.
They are owned by Beretta now I'm told.

Colt's really are best, but US Firearms were as good and probably better from a shooters point of view. Too bad they have closed shop.?

Cimarron makes a pretty good SA. They are made by Uberti and fitted/finished by Cimarron. Their "Evil Roy" is worth a look. Added features and hand-tuned action. I like the wide rear notch sight. The shallow "V" and thin bade front of the originals is tough on older eyes.

Good site to see what the "cowboys" are using;

I'm gonna go against the grain here, AWA was sued by Colt for making "Colts". The "Longhorn" was the culprit.

Is it Nickle or Case colored?

They start as ASM Italian clone and then are assembled here, some are case colored by turnbull and they have action jobs and scary light triggers.
As Italian clones go IMNHO they are the best and most "Colt like" and better than Ubertis by a long shot (again IMNHO) but I have owned a number of clones and only own the AWA now.

I shoot it almost daily and have for over a decade, just remember to tighten every screw after 30 rounds. Mine, a .45 "Longhorn" has well over 10K though it and the pawl is starting to wear out, but having lost a screw or two over the years all were replaced by the nice lady at AWA in FLA for free! I will be asking her for a fresh pawl here soon.

It is the most accurate, best shooting, beloved centerfire pistol I own, no other handgun feels better in my hand. And the SAA roll is just the best! :p
I have tried to not like it 'cause it's a clone but it really, really is a wickedly fine SAA.

FYI: remember these are 1st Generation SAA's the firing pin is the hammer, please only load five, skipping the second tube so the firing pin rests on an empty chamber. NO TRANSFER BARS. You probably know this and I am not sure but it's good advice in case.

I paid $350.00 for mine a long time ago I see them being offered at $600 often, this is too much, they are $400-$500 wheels.

I have put mine right next to a real 1873 SAA, shockingly identical other than the checkering on the hammer.
The bluing and case coloring is stellar and has held up amazingly well considering I carry it in a holster, in the woods and in the weather regularly.

I would buy a clean one in 357 for $450, tomorrow... if I didn't have a BH in 357.. However if you have the $$$$ USFA... are the chits :D

Awesome, thanks for all the good info guys. It's case colored with the black plastic grips. It's a good looking thing. I'm gonna have to think on this one.

Thanks again.
