Just picked up this nice rifle. Looks very well made. Has a good weight and balance tho it. Can't wait to try it out. Is the gas piston spring the recoil spring too? Guess it would have to be since the charging handle locks the bolt to the piston. Pretty neat design.

The 551 is an outstanding rifle (in my opinion one, if not the best) with a fun history. I absolutely love mine.

Let us know what you think after you get to take it to the range.

if you have a problem reaching the safety lever, Krebs Custom makes a nice extended lever

I put one on my sig.

I fondled one of those last week at the local gun store. Felt very, very nice. The only complaint I had was the forend had a little play that I thought was inappropriate in a $1600 rifle.

Finally got to shoot it. Handles real well. Did have FTFs. The bolt rode over the rounds completely several times out of 40 rnds. This only happened while firing not when charging it manually. This was with 2 different new mags. The ammo was factory PMC Bronze. Hope it is just a matter needing break in time. Any advice before I send it back? Didn't get to shoot very long and will be about a week before I can get back out.

For that amount of green, send that bad boy back, call customer service and make them send you a UPS shipping label! And brake in time hell, that rifle should work out of the box.

How does the trigger compare to a basic Rock River two-stage AR trigger?

Not sure as i've never fired a weapon with the rra fcg. It is nice feeling though. 1st stage soft and smooth. 2nd stage crisp and clean with around 5-6# pull.

I hope you get this all sorted out...especially since I recommended this rifle. Thankfully, mine has run flawless. Keep us posted.

Best,

I will take it out again this week and try several brands of ammo and see if that makes a difference. Want to also run at least 100 rnds through it to see if it just needed breaking in. I'm sure it will work out and be a wonderful rifle in the end.

I took mine out for the first time Friday and ran 70 rnds of XM195 without a hic-up.

Did you clean and lube the heck out of it prior to range time?

I noticed a comment regarding price...I found mine for just over $1300 NIB at a localish GS.

It does have an aluminum/alloy lower. I did clean it but didn't put tons of lube on it. Will try lots on the inner rails and see what happens. If it doesn't work after firing with different ammo will send it back under warranty. I paid right around $1300 from Ratworx.

Does anyone know how to remove the hand guards? I tried doing what the manual says but couldn't get them off. Also, do the original Swiss 550 HGs fit better without moving/rattling around? Anybody know where to find a set for a reasonable price?

There is a way to get the handguards to be tight, you use a zip tie cut to fit around where the handguards fit.

Seperate the upper and lower receivers. Then slide the top HG back and the two will seperate...there are tabs that hold them togeather.

I don't believe 550 HGs will fit but would certainly like to find out. BTW, the issuesed HG are supposed to be Swiss.

A few thoughts...Someone on another forum had an issue with the magazine catch being slightly too high, and he wasn't able to lock in a mag, let alone shoot it. You may have an issue where the mag is sitting slightly low, and the bolt overriding the bullets. It appears that you have the older style lower, or I should say, the first 551-A1 lower where SIG utilized a roll pin for the mag release. This was causing problems, and they switched to a different style pin. You will need to send it back to SIG, but at least they'll upgrade your lower to the newest one. Good luck.

No, 550 handguards will not fit the 551A1. They are way to long, but SWISS 551 handguards will fit. The 551A1s I have seen do NOT have Swiss handguards on them, some of them may, but not any I have seen.

I have SWISS 551 handguards on my rifle.

I bought the stock, handguards and pistol grip as a set form Colorado Gun Sales a little over a year ago. They are listed as out of stock at the moment.

YES. 550 Handguards will fit!!!! And, they look very sexy...

You do have to cut them down to 551 length. This is great because you can slowly shave them down to get perfect fitment for your rifle (zero slop). only thing you NEED for this is a front retainer cap from DDLES...

http://www.shop.doublediamondsupply.com/550-Handguard-cap-for-SIG-556-pistol-or-SBR-DD556PCAP02.htm

And they said it couldn't be done...;)

If you want the real-deal Swiss handguards you can get them here: https://www.gunfactory.ch/index.htm It's where I got 551 handguards for my 556, not cheap though.

IIRC, the guy to talk to there is named Rolf, email him he understands English.

Update: took it back out. Oiled up real good. 1 st 20 rounds. Bolt gun :(. Tried several brands of ammo. 2nd mag set the gas to the emergency setting. Ran a lot better with only a couple of FTF. Ran another 20 rnds through on this settin. 3rd mag set back to normal setting. No FTFs. Blasted through the mag. Must of really needed a lot to break it in :uhoh: Works great now.
