I was helping my brother in law clean up his recently deceased father's house and we came across an old Mauser rifle. I'll give the description (didn't have my digial camera with me) and if you guys can help me I'd appreciate it!

It's a full length wood stock, straight bolt. Fixed magazine (could be removed on bottom, ala typical Mauser style). On the upper receiver was marked Mexico Republica (sp) and on the side of receiver was Waffenxxxxx, Steyr, Austria. It was still coated in cosmoline. I'd guess he bought this rifle at least 35-40 years ago, maybe more. His dad was 80+ retired USAF pilot.

Could you guys give me some history, caliber, etc. I don't remember any more, except the serial numbers all matched.

I'm on day 12 of awaiting my C&R.

Thanks.

Mexico bought Mausers from several different manufacturers, including Steyr. The first Steyr was the Mexican Model 1902 Rifle, then the Model 1907, and Model 1912 Steyr rifle & short rifle. The Mexican army used Mausers made by other manufacturers as well, including some made in Mexico.
These rifles were chambered for the 7mm Mauser (7x57).
The Mexican National Crest should say Republica Mexicana, arched over the Mexican Eagle, with the date of manufacture under the eagle.

For what it's worth, if you already have either the first edition or the second edition, don't bother buying the other one. There isn't that much difference between them. A couple more pictures is about it.
Unless of course, you're just anal like me and JUST have to have the other. :D
