Took my Mas from SOG to the range today, along with a bunch of new FAL's. I have the Port ammo, and as I was lead to expect, it's not hot enough to cycle the rifle. Oh well, save the brass and reload!! I am quite impressed with how the rifle shot, though. I wasn't real impressed with the sights, but this thing looks like it's going to be pretty darn accurate. I have a scope mount for it, next time I'll put a scope on it and we'll see how it does, but with iron sights off the hood of the pickup, with a pretty stiff cross wind, it shot a five shot group into about 2" at 50 yards. Not too bad under the circumstances. Heckuva rifle for $220!! :D :D :D

Yeah, I really like the rifle. Too bad the Port ammo won't cycle it, but oh well, it's good brass. I was real impressed with the accuracy, I didn't expect it to be that good. For the price, for a new or like new rifle with all the stuff this one came with....hard to beat. Still gotta shoot my K-31, #5 Enfield, Turk Mauser and Yugo Mauser, and still need to pick up a couple of the Ruskie guns when they are back in stock. I love my C&R license!!! :D :D :D

I've put about 60 rounds thru my MAS with the port. ammo and didn't have a problem one with the cycling.

ER, it's 7.5 FMP from Portugal. SOG has it, $8.95 box/20 but it is boxer primed brass case reloadable.

Hey Mad Dog,
Is it 170 grain bullets? My Port. ammo that I got with my MAS is 170 grain. It will not cycle sometimes. I reloaded the brass (that was salvageable) with some IMR 3031 and it worked like a charm. Let me know if there is some 7.5 ammo out there with a little lighter bullet. I love that thunderstick, just need some bullets to put in it :( . Thanks

Yeah, it's the 170 grain Port. When I have accumulated enough brass to reload it, I think I'll use 147 gr. bullets in it. I saw some post's on gunboards saying the reason some of these won't cycle is the fit between the gas tube and the bolt carrier is too loose, but mine seems to be as snug as you would want it. I think it's just the ammo and the fact it needs broke in.

The 49/56 is one of my all time favorite guns. A thousand dollars worth of good engineering for two hundred and some bucks!
Too bad those damn French just couldn't bump on up to the 7.62 :(
I bought it's little sister - the MAS-36 - just for the cool bayonet :)

I hear what you guys are saying, every time I take one of my MAS's out I can't stop smiling. The darn things shoot straight. I've got an excellent condition 49, 36, 36/51, and my 49/56 is only in good condition. It really pisses me off that you can get the darn near new ones now and the PRK has outlawed them and the Yugo SKS and..............
