Don't know much about the FN49 other than I sure would like to get my hands on a 8mm one day. What is availability? Where would I look to find one? What kind of price-range would I be looking at? Are they hard to get? I've looked around some sites and it does not seem to be a very common item.....or am I wrong?

Simple; just post a WTB on the maketplace side!
I just picked one up a couple of weeeks ago. Price ranges from $375, for CAI re-works :(, to "way-above-what-I-would-pay" for a pristine collectors grade. Most fall in the $500-600 bracket.
I bought mine just to shoot all that inexpensive 8mm available now! That, and the fact that it's the forerunner of the FAL.
Good luck on the "hunt"!

I second what Deltaten said. From my personal experience I would say that the 8mm version that FN made for Egypt is the most commonly found version in the US. Try www.auctionarms.com (http://www.auctionarms.com) and www.forthehunt.com. (http://www.forthehunt.com.) They pop up on those sites from time to time.

Thanks Deltaten. I'm in the same mindframe as you, I want a shooter. I am an absolute fan of the cheap 8mm that's available these days. Unfortunatly I'm limited to my Mauser when shootin time rolls around. The FN49 sounds very appealing and reasonble. Looks like I'm gonna have to put in some overtime the next couple of weeks and get in the hunt.
