Having already finished a successful "scout" project of an M-44 (what a beaut!!!), I'm left with a desire to chop up a Turk (Mauser, that is! :D ).
Do they make a scout mount to replace the rear-site of the Mauser?
How short would you chop the barrel? I figured rith in front of the sling-swivel so that I could use it on the completed project.
I'm anxious to hear your opinions...
Tony.

S&K makes a Mauser scout mount.

Here is an interesting Turk Mauser modification page.

Well, I'm not a big fan of sporterizing milsurps, but I'm not a snotty purist either. Hey, they're your guns after all. And what better gun to cut down that a Turk?
I think lopping it off at about the front sling would be kind of neat. Is your sling band held on with the cross pin or a spring clip? If it's the pin you'd be good to go. You might be able to unitize the sling band to the stock and still be able to remove the action from the stock with it in place.
But again, I like keeping milsurps in their original configuration.

Thanks for the responses. I know how some feel about chopping up a piece of history. I usually only do it with a "second" quality example, and I always have a better one that I keep in it's original configuration. AND, I would only do this with a $50 or less rifle. I have less than $100 in the entire M-44 project, and that includes a mount and a red-dot sight!!! It makes for a very inexpensive toy. And I figured, hey, while I can still get Turks for around $40 I might as well giver it a try!!!
Also, thanks for the link to the scout-mount...

I made a Turk scout rifle .. works great!
I lopped the bbl at 20" .. cut down stock .. removed rear sight .. put Ashley scout set up on it with a pistol scope .. looks great and shoots!

FAC sells a synthetic stock for Mausers that has an integral scope mount.

Have you seen one of those stocks close up? How about a good picture? I have seen them advertised, but it is always a small grainy picture. Looks butt ugly in the ads.

Yeah, those stocks make me want to dig out my eyes with a Turk bayonet. UUUU-gleee. How about some black leather dye on the original wood?

Those stocks ARE ugly, butt-ugly, that is!!! I've seen them at gunshows and I wouldn't put them on anything I own.
O.K. let me tell you a secret about how I finished my Scout M-44. I sanded, shaped and degreased the wood. Then I liberally sprayed on Duplicolor bedliner. It's been to the field several times and has proven itself very durable and scratch resistant. It looks like a synthetic stock. You would have to see it to believe it, because, quite frankly, I wouldn't have believed it either!

Actually, a good spot weld puts your eyes directly in line with the scope if you use low rings. No having to raise your head off the milsurp stock in order to see the crosshairs. The thing is actually comfortable to hold. I'm helping 2 clients put their together- one a turk and the other a VZ-24. I'll try to get pics when they're done.

If you are looking for a synthetic stock, Natchez had Ramlines for $60. The barrel channel is stepped for a military barrel and the Turk drops right in.
