Got this in a package deal, barrel has terrible surface rust,so thought about changing to a shorter barrel, quickly found out the 500 is different, you need to change the magazine as well.

So what exactly do I need to get to have a short(18'' or 20'') barrel and 7 shot capacity?

Considering if I sell the Winchester 94 that was part of the package deal I would have paid $5 for the shotgun I can't complain...LOL

Mossy makes about 20 diff versions of the 500.. There is one that has the extended tube and shorter barrel from the factory.. Here are several descriptions and pt#'s of both the 500 and 590 series...

Here is one:
MSBRG 500 PRS 12/20/SYN 8 SHOT pt#50577
MSBRG 500 PRS 12/20/SYN & PG 8SHOT pt#50579

There are also several in the 590 Series..

MSBRG SPC 590 12/20/CYL HS SYN 8 SHT pt# 50645
MSBRG SPC 590 12/20/CYL HS SYN PRK 8 pt#50660

Another but tough to get:
MSBRG 590A1 12/20/CYL 8 SH PRK SYN pt#51660

Thanks for the part numbers.

I found a 8 shot tube, but then the barrel I also found is 18.5'',so I didn't know if it would work with the tube.

It seems the 8 shot requires a 20 inch barrel.

Since the threaded cap on the 20" barrel is on the end of the barrel, then yes, you will need a different mag tube if you want to use the 18.5" barrel. With the 18.5" barrel and correct mag tube you will only have 5+1 capacity but you will be able to use the longer sporting barrels should you find that you need one. The longer barrels for the 7+1 tube are not as common.

What I have is a LONG barrel right now,5+1 capacity.

I might as well keep the gun as it isn't worth much due to the surface rust(Why people think a closet in an non air conditioned home is a good environment for guns is beyond me) on the barrel.

So I would need a 20 inch barrel to get 7+1 correct?

Okay...now I just need to find a barrel, seems everyone is out of stock.

Must be everyone prepping for the Zombie holocaust.

Why not have someone blast the rust off of the gun and then have it refinished? Having only $5 in it, you could do some pretty cool stuff with it. The 2 extra rounds in the tube aren't that big of a deal.

If you want to go whole-hog why not look for a 590 barrel and mag tube w/ spring?

I was thinking of duracoating it,but want a shorter barrel first.

Hack the long one off at 18" or 18.5"( which was the factory length for the 5+1 shot model) and have the barrel drilled for a new front sight bead. It ain't rocket surgery...

But then I wouldn't have a long barrel to hunt with...just in case I ever want to go hunting.

Long barrels are a dime a dozen...... Come to think of it, so are the 18.5" ones.

They are by far the most common Mossberg shotgun barrel out there, and Mossberg has been making them for decades. They used to sell the 5+1 models with both barrels, long and short, in a kit. I'm sure that not all of the owners of those shotguns kept them both, so a quick search will yield what it is you need... or just want.

Here 'ya go, just what you need for $77.
