Anyone own one of these? The ones that I've seen range in condition from really ratty to fairly decent, and all seem to be in the $50-$60 range. Worth owning or no?

Let me give you a hearty thumbs up on owning a Turk T38. They really do run the entire field from very nice to very beaten, but they all shoot and the ammo is cheap. Century usually runs specials on them...the last one was 5/$150 shipped and ammo has been around $65/1000 shipped from Century. I say you can't go wrong with 'em!

I love my Turks. First rifle I started collecting with. Then the monkey got on my back...not it's the FAL's! The Turks are a blast to shoot, mine are very accurate and are fun to "fix up" (stipping, cleaning, etc...). Try looking up on your search engine "Turkish Mauser Web Page"...you will find a whole list of need things! Good luck. By the way, if you shoot the cheap ammo, make sure you clean and re-clean the rifle as it is VERY corrosive! :D

Milsurp shooters dot com has a Turk Mauser forum.
Some of what I've read on that is that you should check headspace on them for sure. They also have a bolt exchange going, presumably for headspace issues.
Most dealers are advertising them at about $39.95 + shipping. Definitly going to be a purchase as soon as the C&R license arrives. ;)

I have 11 with 3 being the short rifle 93 and or 03 versions. I love them.
Cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, easy to restore/refinish, and parts are everywhere (except for the short rifles).

Your really getting a quality rifle whose parts were made by Germany and Czhechoslovakia. Many were German GEW or 98 variants, others being Czech 98/22 or 24 types. Almost all of mine have German or Czech markings.

Only down side I can see is that while in storage or during the importation process, the bolts were all removed and shipped seperately from the rifles themselves. Headspace issues arise from time to time due to "just any bolt" being included with the rifles for sale. Out of over 300 Turk 38's, I have only seen one that had a matching numbers bolt.
The other detractor is some of the new stocked Turks are pretty crued. Some look as if the stock was made by using a hatchet to shape it. But with a little work, they can be made to look great.

If you want me to post pics of mine, let me know.

Good luck

Well yeah!! Let's see those pics. What all have you done with them. Please don't say sporterize. Ouch, that hurts to type. Would like to pick one up myself, but my car will only hold so many guns. (I live in it now, thatnk to the FAL.)

I haven't sporterized (bubbafied) any and don't intend to.I keep all mine original , other than trying to repair/refinish oil soaked stocks. I do have one Turk Short rifle that has been chopped, but not by me.
Pics coming soon.

Here's a sample. Left the short rifles out plus one on the bench getting de-slimed.
