the rifle looks very nice, i'd say very good + on the outside. the inside looks good too except for the barrel-it was full of gunk. i scrubbed for a while making little progress, then i chucked up a piece of rod in my drill and ran the brush up and down for a bit. it has cleaned up alot, but is still a bit dark. the rifling looks good though. overall, i happy with it. it should shoot just fine, and i'm hoping the barrel will clean up some more as i use it.

It will. There was a batch of rearsenaled 49/56 which had the bores parkerized. That's what you are seeing. The more you shoot, the shinier it gets.
What caliber did you get?

i got the original 7.5 french caliber. i didn't think they were selling the .308 animals anymore.
i'm glad to hear about the parked barrel-i couldn't understand how such a good looking rifle on the outside could have such a dark bore. (like i've never seen that before!) thanks for the info.

whats the ammo situation for them 7.5's ??
(not that I really want a french pos rifle, just the fact that it's a rifle is enough!) :D

sog has new production fnm portuguese ammo for 8.95 a box of 20. (the same brand of port surplus 7.62 we all love)
i bought mine from cole's though and paid way more for the same stuff. it's reloadable which is a plus.
wg&a has some mg surplus on links. i think it's about 100.00 for 200 rounds including shipping. it's not reloadable.

you can make the cases from 6.5x55 brass by running it into Lee's 7.5 french dies, trimming and then loading. Use 30 caliber
147 gr bullets. I downloaded the powder recipe from Assault Web that someone else had posted but I am at work and can't get to it. Good luck with your rifle- they are the size of an SKS, detachable mags, in a larger caliber- rugged as hell. YOu'll like it.
