Yes, its called the charging handle. The lip of the BHO will eventually come loose if you keep using it to send the bolt forward. It is better to use the charging handle.

How does one use the charging handle to lock the bolt back without engaging the BHO?

He's talking about using the charging handle to load the first round rather than releasing the carrier using the BHO. Pull back on the CH & let it fly. He's right. You will still, of course, need to use the BHO to lock the carrier back in the open position. If you want a slightly better (larger) BHO you could post a WTB in the marketplace for a South African "wide foot" type. One of the FALs I built a few years ago was a mixmaster I built with the sole purpose of making it "user friendly". I used a wide foot BHO, inch type selector, inch mag release, etc. Hope this helps.

I can see releasing the bolt via the charging handle - albeit it would be much slower. But thought perhaps I was missing something FAL-manual-of-arms wise about locking the bolt back.

I use the BHO to release the bolt... Never had a problem after 7 years.
