"The only one professional enough to carry a firearm..."
I thought the SS were the best of the best. Obviously not, because this isn't an isolated incident:

Two White House Secret Service agents are in the hospital Tuesday after the accidental discharge of a government-issued firearm.
Both secret service agents — one with a bullet wound to his leg, the other with shrapnel wounds to his face — were taken to George Washington University...

A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Nancy Reagan is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hip...

Three weeks after a toddler accidentally shot himself, his father faces criminal prosecution -- under a rarely used and difficult-to- prove charge -- for leaving his loaded handgun within the boy's reach.
Kenneth John Bouley, 34, a Secret Service officer, was charged Tuesday under a 1992 Maryland law that makes it a misdemeanor for an adult to leave a loaded gun "where [he] knew or should have known that an unsupervised minor would gain access to it."
Here's a blast from the past -- a near miss:

Hours after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, a jumpy Secret Service agent came within seconds of accidentally shooting new President Lyndon Johnson point-blank in the chest, the agent reveals in a new book.
...Blaine had the gun pointed at the man's chest and was about to fire when he recognized the new President.
"I swear he turned white," Blaine recounted. "He had just walked out for a breath of air! He hadn't told anyone. When Kennedy left the house, he would notify the command post."
For a long moment in the shadows, LBJ and the agent looked at each other.
