View Full Version : 2012 FAL calendar ** UPDATE **

def90
October 15, 2011, 21:59
This is going to have to be quick as I have procrastinated to get this out..

I am going to open up submissions to get your FAL into the next calendar. Just email me a nice big pic (the bigger the file the better) of your FAL and if it gets selected for one of the 12 months you get one free calendar.

Send pics to def90 @ hotmail.com (Obviously remove the spaces before and after the @)

Feel free to post them here as well.

I will accept submissions for the next 2 weeks and then I will place the order for the calendars and start taking payment and orders. I will be ordering 150 or so calendars and will likely be charging between $18-20 each. I will be asking for payment up front as I don't have a ton of liquid capital at the moment to cover all of the printing cost.

This post is for picture submissions only!

I will place an ad in the marketplace when I am ready to start taking orders.. Thanks!

Here is an example of what we are looking for (except bigger!):

I did that on purpose.. If you list your email address on any forum spam bots are likely to find it and send you all kinds of fun stuff.

I assumed it was a widely known thing to put the spaces in there for that reason.

Since you asked (sort of) you need to retake those exact pics on a cloudy day. The bright light shining through the trees washes out wherever it hits, while the rifles in the shade look too dark. Take the pics on an overcast day with thin but complete cloud cover and the light will be constant, bright, but diffused. Taking pics in early morning or late evening light can work just as well if not better but you gotta be a bit more careful setting up the shots.

Put me down for one calendar. I signed up for one last year and kept waiting for a post that said to send payment, and never saw anything like that, then around Christmas, there was a post saying that they were all shipped, so I never got one last year.

When you need the payment, please post that here. I still don't know how I missed it last year, but I did, and I don't want that to happen again.

Thanks Harley!

Since I took that photo I've swapped out the stock trigger with a Jim Garthwaite trigger. The stock part had too much curvature and my big long fingers had trouble getting good even pressure on it. The Garthwaite trigger is flatter and does the trick, I highly recommend it.

Here's a couple of full length shots of the rifle.............

Glad I could help HBR! It's nice isn't it, building basically a BRAND NEW FAL from these Argy kits!

Actually, this finished rifle is making me want another Argy soooooo bad! I have an early Argy barrel screaming for a kit. My gun budget sucks right now, but as soon as I can scrape together the cake, I'll be looking for some parts to tackle an early Argy build.

Sorry everyone, I am way behind on everything. Last spring and summer were brutally slow in my industry (home automation) and I am taking advantage of every bit of business I can get over the holidays which is typically the busiest period of the year for me. I have also been in and out of town and am leaving again this Saturday for another week.

I promise to get this rolling as soon as I get back as I see a light at the end of the tunnel as far as getting caught up on work and everything else, although the recent snow we got here is putting a damper on the security cameras I need to install on someones house. Running up to XMas I worked 3 weeks in a row without a full day off. Yes I know I am on here posting and stuff but that is because I usually pop onto the internet rather than stare at the wall while I am downloading changes to someones control system.

We might miss a couple weeks in January but there will be 11 more months to enjoy it. :)

Thanks for your patience.

So, the "update"is that these still aren't done, but you are working on it. Is that about right?

No problem. I grew up in the Pennsylvania Dutch country, and they have a saying back there that goes, "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get". So don't feel too lonesome about getting into a time pinch. Just let us know when to send you the bucks for the 2012 calendar.

Things are getting caught up work wise and I am back from my first real vacation in 8 years so this is on my hotplate for the next week. I have the basic layout ready and just need to get a proof back to be sure it is up to my standards.

Sorry for the delay..

def,

Count me in for one as well. The spot on the wall where the 2011 calendar is looking mighty empty!

Yeah, I turned the actual calendar pages over and left the beautiful pics showing. Hell, I'm still enjoying last year's pics but I'm looking forward to what's coming next!!

Just a little tickle to see if we're getting close. :shades:

I know you're busier than a 3-peckered billy goat Def; is there anything we can do to help out?

Ok, I nominate Chris to carry on in this endevor, he has enough quality FALs to do his own calender, all he needs is someone with a good camera and the tech skills to put it together, and possibly a couple pics of rifles he doesn't own to stretch to 24 months:beer::beer::beer: You're welcome Chris:biggrin: ( In the event the original organizer of this has given up of course)

As Yoda would say, getting a little late to come out with a 2012 calender it is. Maybe next year?

Oh come on now. Are any of us really going to use this as a day-to-day appointment calendar? Sorry, I'm in just for the eye candy.

Sometimes life just gets in the way, and you gotta learn to step in and say 'I can't handle this.' That's where I'm at. I understand where he is with this. It's something that he said he'd do so he feels obligated and WANTS to do it because it's something he'd enjoy, but other things have come along and reprioritized his time. As much as folks DON'T LIKE to be on the receiving end of that, the reality is that as men with responsibilities we all have to arrange them in proper order regularly, and can't always control what we are saddled with.... or step in, as is often the case for me. I went to do an inspection on a 65 year old airplane across the state a few weeks ago that was supposed to be just a 100 hr on the engine. It turned into a complete annual, with many associated squawks, a failed alternator in the car, bad rental equipment, and 7 days. There was the ferry flight home where it came back to get finished, and my car has been down there in the hanger since then. I have to travel across state again tomorrow to go get it so there's an eighth day. It was supposed to be a weekend project.

My point is sometimes there's just not enough time for everything and you have to make cuts. I see the signs real clearly here. Who knows what's going on in his life. I will always appreciate last years calendar and it's art, and wish I hadn't given all mine away.

Thanks Def for the effort. Maybe next year. There'll be a better picture pool to draw from anyway!

I agree with setting and sticking to your priorities Adam. It's true, as adults, we all have our daily crosses to bear. ;) Certainly I don't think anyone here is questioning Def's integrity or level of commitment on this project. I, for one, am damn glad that there is someone here with his talent and motivation to even consider such a task. It gives all of us hack FAL builders something great to which we aspire.

I think though that the impatience expressed here by some in this thread is more related to communication. Def had stated in an earlier post that work was kicking his butt and that is certainly enough of a reason to delay or even postpone this year's calendar. No sweat. However, since the project was still in progress through his last post, I think that a little update from Def to let us know if it's a yea or nay would help keep all us impatient bastards in line.

I know there are several of us with cool FALs who did not submit a photo because (enter excuse here) who now can say "Well, maybe I should re-read that thread on how to set up a good gun photo and put something together."

Let's look this as an opportunity to raise the bar on FAL photos and compose some kick ass shots of our rifles.

When the next opportunity for a calender comes up we should be able to submit tons of great pictures and make the calender something anyone would
be proud to have on the wall.

Let's all get ready for the next calendar.

In this economy I think we all understand that you don’t turn down work.
Like the old saying, “make hay while the sun shines”
Also things just come up sometimes and life is one step forward and three steps back.
That said, I agree with HR that if it’s not doable this year just say, hey I’m just too tied up this year.
No further explanation necessary.

I'm a small business owner. I totally get it. I just wish Def could tell us the deal. If he's got to beg off no harm, no foul. It's not like any money ever changed hands.

I still think a 2 year callendar would be the shizzle. ANd Def would only have to work his butt off every other year! :)
