Hello,
I have a nice stainless barrel that I need to match the black finish of my gun.

What are my best options here?

Gun Kote?

Can I rust blue it?

I can't park at the moment, but would that work?

Park and blue won't take on a SS barrel. Gunkote or Duracoat will work if adequately prepped. What's getting a new barrel?

That's what I thought.

My AMD-65 is getting the barrel :)

Ok, Gunkote it is.

I'm guessing it will need to be bead blasted right? I don't have the setup to do that, are there any alternatives?

Most any place that blues can have your stainless barrel black oxide finished. They may sub it out, but it's a very common service.

Why not assemble the rifle and then have it all finished with GunKote ?
That way it will ALL match.

The difference in cost between having the barrel assembly finished versus the whole gun may not be all that much.

There are quite a few colors available in GunKote, I think.
You'll have some choices about how you want your finished product to look if you have finished after it's assembled.

The instructions I have for GunKote show blasting or sanding than a wash with acetone before spray and bake, the basic color shows preheat to 100 degrees before spraying than 400 degrees bake.

Depending on the type of stainless, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid will usually result in a dull black finish if applied at room temperature. Higher temperatures may result in a different effect, but handling hot acid is not my idea of fun (at least not without a fume hood). According to Mike Lau's "The Military and Police Sniper" book, this can remove a bit of material, and so he recommends that this finish be applied only once (touch-ups should be accomplished by applying a touch of paint).

Baked-on coatings are an excellent alternative, although not worth nearly as many WECSOG points.

No homo, but I love you guys

Ok, it's decided. I'm going to pre-treat the receiver completely with GK
K-phos, then assemble the gun, then paint the gun with Gunkote in a flat black.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking forward to this paint job. It won't crap out like Duracoat did on me - mainly because I'll follow directions to a T and take my time in prep.

Well,
Another $100 to the old AK. I think I could have bought 3 by now. But where's the fun in that, right. (I also got a tapco trigger, so it's closer to $70)

GK and K-Phos will be in next week. This gives me time to get the AK totally ready - except for riveting the trunnions, for lack of treatment on the receiver.

Rich at CGW used to offer it as a service, might want to check his sight or give him a call.

Thanks for the tip, but there's no going back now :)

I know this will turn out good, as long as I can get it sand blasted.

I remember reading about a product (maybe from Brownells) that Garand owners have used to blacken the gas cylinder on their rifles. I can't remember anything else about it.

Some firearms refinishers can blue your stainless barrel.
Oxynate # 84 from Brownell's

For Rebluing Stainless Steels & Cast Iron

In the past, it was almost impossible for the general gun- smithing or bluing shop to blue stainless steel guns successfully. Now, with Oxynate No. 84, we have a superior new formulation for stainless bluing that has met and passed all of our demands and requirements. It has worked on all the popular guns (S&W’s, Rugers, and virtually every type of stainless we could find), and even does a mighty good job on Cast Irons. It is predictable, repeatable, reliable and easy to operate. Blue an action or frame with a stainless barrel in No. 84 first, then go into the No. 7™ tank to blue the action or frame. The whole process is explained in the instructions.

Yes, that is the stuff.
