New guy here. New guy question. How is the interchangability on things like this to say a standard Imbel ? Metric change with metric and inch change with inch?

Israeli light barrel (i.e. standard) handguards should fit perfectly on a standard metric Imbel with full length gas tube, with no mods required. Just be certain the HGs are for the light barrel (LB), not the more common (and much cheaper) ones for the Izzy heavy barrel (HB). The quickest visual identifier is the two semi-circular cut-outs on the bottom of the HB HGs which allow clearance for the bipod; these are not present on the LB HGs. For a more "authentic" appearance, with the LB you will also want to fit two (2) of the donut shaped spacers that fit over the gas tube, but that is not essential.

The Izzy LB HGs will also fit on most Commonwealth (inch pattern) rifles, but there are other wood handguard options for those that are more authentic, so you don't see Izzy HGs on them so often. The Izzy LB HGs will also fit on metric FALs with short gas tube (like the Stg58) but that combination leaves the back part of the gas piston exposed, which is not a good thing.

Be warned though, once you put Izzy HGs on your FAL, you'll also want a matching Izzy butt stock for "balance". Then you won't be satisfied until your FAL also has an Izzy selector, sand-cut bolt carrier with forward assist, and a stack of Izzy magazines. Soon you'll develop a fondness for the "naked muzzle" look, and will be talking to your gunsmith about "circumcising" your rifle. Before you know it, you'll be stocking up on IDF web gear and studying Hebrew at your local community college.

Mazel Tov!

I must not be a purist. I have Izzy LF handguards, a HB buttstock w/ flip up plate, and a Stoll flash hider. I enjoy the irony.
