There's always been checkpoints out there. From what I remember, it seems like there would be nobody there or they would wave you through. I'm sure times have changed.

I have only spoken with the Border Patrol one time, and that was when someone did something that attracted their attention. On the surface, they were not very pleasant, although I realize in retrospect, years later, that they were not so bad.
