...for copyright infringement. So why is ICE doing this?

I found this information interesting. Acting in haste before the law is enacted. Please, discuss...

They used to hang pirates, now they just close their web sites.
Funny thing is there's another FAL Files thread making jokes about a sea Captain that wouldn't fight Blackbeard.

they testing the water on how easy it is for them to shut down information they deem inappropriate.
Its all about control, has NOTHING to do with copyright.
These sites have been shutdown regardless if they were hosting copyrighted material, and were done so WITHOUT notification of the owner.

No warrants issued? No probable cause shown to a neutral magistrate for a warrant to seize?
Damn...Who needs a warrant these days? See a possible crime? Shut it down and drain them of money. No need to bother some judge somewhere for a warrant. Fedgov wins again!
Constitution loses......... again.
Getting the sheep used to unlawful actions by the fedgov is all this is......
They will be shutting down whoever and whatever they want for any reason very soon. Bet on it.
Oh! They already are!

Looks like they did have a court issued warrant. Far as advance notification, lots of individuals find out they are going to the pokey at the same time the cops show up at the door.

Why is Homeland security seizing websites for copyright violations?
That's like the BATF pulling raids based on illegal drugs.

Maybe it's their JOB?
http://www.ice.gov/iprcenter/
Protection is Our Trademark
The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) stands at the forefront of the U.S. Government’s response to global intellectual property (IP) theft.
As a task force, the IPR Center uses the expertise of its member agencies to share information, develop initiatives, coordinate enforcement actions, and conduct investigations related to IP theft. Through this strategic interagency partnership, the IPR Center protects the public’s health and safety, the U.S. economy and the war fighters.
It would be pretty lame of the US to bitch about pirating in China if we aren't willing to do something about our own pirates.

Stopping intellectual robbery requires no warrant just as a bank robbery does not, a crime in progress is a crime in progress.

Others would like them to protect their property rights.
Resources are limited. We live in an imperfect world.
They do some of both, but can never please all.
A lot more resources are put into securing the border than protecting intellectual property rights from pirates.
Would you prefer we raise taxes or increase the deficit so that this agency has unlimited resources to pursue your priorities?

Interesting read regarding the bill itself, which it appears has only just been placed on the congressional calendar.

They have to pass it to know what's in it.
Interesting analysis Jen. I see all the 'ususal suspects' were paid off as well.

Holy fruck!
(Please, correct me if I am wrong.) I thought that gov.gov could turn off the entire web for whatever reason (national emergency, etc.). Now they can "snipe" specific websites by law for nothing more than a whim of the AG?

These sites have been shutdown regardless if they were hosting copyrighted material, and were done so WITHOUT notification of the owner. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seizing sites directly from ICANN because of complaints filed against them; the agency is not doing so under the auspices of the Digital Millenium Coptyright Act (DMCA) or a more recently ratified, so-called “censorship” law, the Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act, or COICA, which was created specifically to address the issue of piracy.
So how are they doing it?
Rather than using DMCA or COICA, the DHS has, as one spokesperson told The New York Times, “executed court-ordered ☍ seizure warrants against a number of domain names.” The Regime flexing its muscles....

If Hollywood, the music industry or whatever want to protect their property they have the mega bucks to hire teams of lawyers to do that. I resent having to pay for my government to expend public funds for private benefit.
This shit is nothing more than the camels nose of tyranny creeping further into the tent.

You are saying the government shouldn't enforce this law and that industry should go into CIVIL court, something that can take years and millions of dollars.
To put this another way, protection of intellectual property under copyrights and patents -drugs, inventions, movies, songs, books - should be a civil responsibility of the copyright/patent owner, and that violators (pirates) shouldn't expect to face criminal charges for breaking the law.
That's like saying owners should take burglars or car thieves to civil court to recover losses rather than have them face those charges in criminal proceedings.

In the past copyrighted materials were easy to steal and use, naked in the market place, the internet leaves a trail to follow if one is interested in following trails, most trackers do it for a reward, a doggy bone treat, love or money.
Lucky for the assembled membership the "give me liberty or give me death" patent has run out.

The word "Marxist" has been owned by the Marx familysince the begining. They are pursuing civil action against any and all that use it without permision. Same with the "Hitler" family. The Communist pary of Russia claims that word too. Germany owns "Nazi". I beleive "Socialist" is public domain.

You talked about limited resources, how about using them to protect our sovereign property, our country from those who steal outright from the American people? Allocate where the priorty is.
Also, if you read about this whole thing, some of the websites that were seized weren't selling any pirated goods.

Some so called experts were talking on the radio today about the buzz on blogs being that this is a hoax. It does kind of make you wonder if this is true why they don't just seize wikileaks.
