I wanted to chime in to the T-shirt thread, but decided that a new topic was in order. Maybe "some Mod" can port the relevant non t-shirt posts to this thread for continuity.

So,

My ear has been itching for days and I couldn't figure out WTH... Then I realized I hadn't logged in for a few weeks. Well low and behold I have been part of the T-shirt thread and didn't even know it!! I love the idea of all this group thinking going on and thinning the BS out of the annual Oregon FALshoot. It may sound painful at this stage, but the more bitching we do now, the less we will have to bitch about after next year. So keep the B!+$#@'s coming and this ship will steer it's self.

Range politics, big scores and third party antics aside, 2010 still had ALL the important features of the traditional Oregon FAL shoot:
BBQ(and Curry),
BS(or not to BS depending on who is gonna call you on it),
Beer(and Crown and Jack and the rest of their buddies),
Beds(or a facsimile thereof)
Breakfast(or just coffee for the well hung),
Babes(youth, learning the ropes to be the next generation),
and, last but not least...
Bullets(going down range).

Now, I'll admit, I did get caught up in the scoring more than I did the shooting. I guess that is because I don't get to score often enough and had never shot my FAL on the clock. Hmmm, I could just attend more scoring events to get the bug out?

So momentary assessment:
2011 will be a rifle infested BBQ and camping trip in Central Oregon. Somewhere with a pistol pit of poppers(and BBQ smoker) on one side of the camp fire and, on the other side(right next to the pancake grill), a clear view, from prone, to a hillside about 400 yds away with steel scattered every hundred yards in between. There might be a shot clock and some stage like stuff to play at, or not, depending on if there are volunteers that want to produce such details...

Motto: Eat, Drink, Be Merry, for tomorrow the steel shall ring.

You are good. This thread had me looking at the computer-sign ups last night, and this is where it is at:

1) vanillagorilla is right: it isn't half the people who didn't pay. I overstated the case based on old numbers. I'm sorry about that, and

2) the number of people who didn't pay is at least six

3) I'm not excited to spend any time over the $300 or so, as I'm kinda burnt on this event, and I'm still not delivering on the t-shirts yet - so I'm spending time on this already

4) I had a GREAT time hanging out with old and new people alike. I was really glad to finally put some names with some faces (fry), as well as meet new people I hadn't corresponded with. This is the best part of the event in my opinion

5) I'm not sure I want to do this the 'new' way again (rifle range). There are tons of good things about it: the major two things being that our gear is secure (in the same location as the shoot), and that there are different ranges that we can use (SOF, handgun, drop 8, etc.). The negatives are that I can't stand the thought of the range nazis catching us drinking on the property, and we get punted before the event even starts. That would suck the big, fat, suck. Also, I don't think the group ended up liking the 'more competitive feel' of the event this year. In years past, we would drink and bbq (well, Sportnut would bbq, and we would eat his brilliant grub), and then we'd wake up and shoot. Maybe it would be good to get some other people making their "vision" of this thing happen. But I seriously don't know where we could get together and have:

1) secure location
2) backstops WITH the longer ranges/visibility available
3) camping location
4) accessible to lots of people

and, finally...

6) I don't know if the various people's ideas can be crammed into one event. The camping, drinking, campfire BSing has been the coolest part. The friendly nature of the shooting has been well-suited to that 'feel'. We were going two ways at once this summer, and it seemed to have bent some people. For example:

1) we had some people who were shooting rifles that weren't behaving, and they kept shooting and shooting at 100 and 200 yard targets that weren't falling down. Last summer - no problem. We were all here to shoot all the targets. This summer, some people were unhappy that we didn't 'cap' the event times and "keep it moving". I can see both points, but we didn't see it coming ahead of time, so we ended up running late and some people left without finishing the events

2) we had a head-to-head event for the first time (IIRC), and the brackets weren't announced ahead of time. Last summer, no problem; you could just show up and get a time - on your schedule. This summer - big problem, and we were either waiting or adjusting brackets on the fly in an effort to keep it moving. Some people didn't end up liking the head to head "race" feel to it. But we didn't know that it would induce more stress to people. For example, I knew I was going to lose sooner or later to Pluskat, Snowhawk Jockey, OregonFALer, or vanillagorilla. And I didn't see Tat2 coming (superfast), so I wasn't particularly stressed by the "race". But some people were - and it didn't fit with the camping/friendly feel from years past (and the night before).

Anyway... I'm probably going to let someone else take the lead on next year. Snowhawk Jockey and 4x401, as well as other people, have expressed an interest in helping more, and I'm thinking that maybe the COSSA location (east of Bend) would be a cool one to check out. Or maybe it is time to find the legendary bunker a few miles east of COSSA and see if ggiilliiee will come out and shoot at his favorite location. Truth is that I didn't like the first event at all - I thought it was retarded that a bunch of people would show up and shoot at rocks in a gravel pit in the middle of nowhere - but the people I met were GREAT! So I tried to keep people showing up. Maybe it went too far (competitive) this time. Or maybe I just messed up the administration of it by not being prepared for the numbers. Or whatever.

I'll come and shoot. I'll come and camp. I'll come to reconnect with people I like and don't get to see very often. I'll bring steel targets and paint and a garbage can lid. But I'm guessing someone else is going to have to handle the location, the admin, the sign-ups, and the running of the show. I'm not 'sad' or hoping people will tell me it was great, etc. I'm going to be out of town for several weeks leading up to the normal date (last weekend in June), and I don't want to have the health of this great event hanging on me while I'm away.

I hope this event doesn't puke. And I hope that JerryMRC is still able to get himself out here for it - it is very cool for people to come from all over the western US to shoot this thing.

Peace.

Uh, fella....I'm going to give you the BOTD and say I KNOW you didn't mean it to sound the way it sounds....."LET" someone else take the lead?!?!

(this is where Pluskat alienates damn-near everyone...but doesn't care)

Folks, this event started out as a "get-together....with shooting". NOT a "competitive shooting event....with some congregating"! brunop, when you called me right before the shoot and asked me if I thought people would be disappointed in the quality of the shoot, I SHOULD have told you what I was thinking. I apologize for not doing so, but I had seen how much effort you and VG had put into this thing and (uncharacteristically) I didn't want to pee on your campfire. What I SHOULD have said is that, for me, you two have planned and organized a best-of-intentions derailment of what, for previous years, was the highlight of the year. Now don't misunderstand, I love competition....I don't play well with others, but I love competitive shooting events. That being said, the Fal Shoot was NEVER ABOUT being a competitive event.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I LIKE hanging out at a gravel pit with like-minded folks, talking, cooking....and shooting. To me, it's the embodiment of Freedom. There are no range nazi's and if I want to go for a stroll with a pack and my rifle, I can. Hell, I can even cool my parched throat with a beer from the ice chest while I walk or relax and watch others attempting to shoot.....ok, ok, they can shoot well too.

The previous year's event was about as serious competition-wise as I hoped the Fal Shoot would ever get. It seemed like a perfect blend of camping, cooking, drinking, fraternizing and shooting. We had beautiful surroundings and despite having to travel a whole 4 minutes to the shooting area, we still got to pick and choose what, if any, shoot event to be in. Sportsnut's selfless contribution to the grub aside, everyone could/should have gotten out of the weekend what they wanted. I know I did, with some quality watermelon time to boot.

I'm not trying to be "unappreciative" of others efforts but, when no-one asks you to radically morph an annual event, and you take it upon yourself to do it, don't be surprised if there are those from the event's inception who don't cotton to the changes. Also, don't get nose-bent if accolades are not heaped upon you for your volunteerism. I know...I know, I didn't HAVE to come. That's factual...but pretty damn sad when you consider that the three previous shoots went off with everyone feeling like they had a good time and NO controversy following the event.

I'm one of the six. I'm also the guy that ran the HTH handgun match for five and a half hours in the sun. (the right side of my face and neck STILL are a bit sunburned and tender.) I didn't eat any of the catered food, nor did my family. I was also the last one to leave other than yourself, and I seem to recall you and I hauled significant amounts of steel targets into the bay sheds right up until almost dark. I could've pissed in ANY direction and not hit a single other shooter from that day who stayed to help....except Snowhawk and I would never THINK of peeing in his direction. (he's too nice of a guy for that)

I'll make good on the range fees ASAP, not because you're hounding me....because you're not....but because I won't have any of those that skedaddled, instead of staying to help, feeling like they're somehow more righteous than those of us who haven't ponied up yet.

Other than the treacherous voyage to/from on "THE PEARL".....(sorry Dave), I'll vote for the Island or the Pit next year.....unless I'm voted off the show and then.....ta hell with all y'all.....you too Fry.

(I will now diminish.....and go into the west....and remain.....Galadriel)

I know I only attended 1 previous event, but it seems that there was a GIANT leap from what previous shoots were, to what you endevored to put together this year.
Absolutely nothing wrong with your intentions, but perhaps its a case of "to much to soon".

Perhaps it comes down to a simple question?

Do the masses prefer a "structured, competetive event", or the relaxed "eat, drink, shoot, socialize", format of years gone by?

Personaly, I would prefer the latter.
Why?
Because I prefer shooting in an informal (yet safe) situation with like minded, good people. There hasn`t been a single person at the last 2 shoots I attended that I felt I needed to avoid talking to. Good people all the way around.

Maybe thats as far as it needs to go right now?

Well, I guess we get all get to have a say...

I thought that last year was great, too. vanillagorilla told me that several people thought it was sorta 'weak shit', and that he wanted to get involved to help it grow and get way, way cooler.

I (wrongly?) assumed he spoke for a lot of the regulars, so I was all happy to do something different. I enjoyed the ribs at the catered lunch, but I didn't request that upgrade. I didn't think of all the events by myself, including the Poker Run that got scrapped at the last minute.

I made a scoring table up, but the volunteer scorer didn't show up until almost 11:30AM.

I made a bunch of mistakes, like the head-to-head handgun match that took too long. Like not 'capping' individual shooting times at some of the Drop 8 events which took too long. And other stuff that has been denoted.

But I'm not the person who single-handedly moved the event to a range for a more competitive event. I'm not the one that said that this thing should really grow and get big. That was at least a bit of group think.

I'm not sure what you mean, Pluskat, by the "...LET someone take the lead?!!", comment, but what I meant is that I'm definitely not emotionally tied to putting another shoot on; other people can run with what they want to do. What I meant to say is that I'm definitely not getting in anyone else's way, and I'm definitely not going to get my feelings hurt if someone else starts running with the ball.

And I think it would be great if we don't do it at a range - as i said above. I'll be happy if we show up and camp and bbq and shoot.

I hope we do it the third weekend in June so Fry will come to the event again - if that works for everyone else who came this year on that date.

I like the direction your going with this Snowhawk Jockey. I'll be there where ever it ends up at . If its on the island again I could provide transport to and from for about 6-8 at a time depending on the arsonal each person carries.I have also heard good things about the previous years location and would like to check it out sometime to. Last year was my first shoot and it was a blast. I don't want to see it come to an end right after I got started. I'll be glad to help out anyway I can. I'm pretty good at cooking for large groups and could help plan some grub.

Ok, I have 6 different boats now, including a really sweet 23ft cuddy cabin full canvas, new engine, seats and paint, boat problem is solved for the Island.. if you all want to go that way ?

The first and second years doing this shoot taught me a few things, if you want to know what they are, you will have to come to the next shoot;) lol

One thing I have learned about groups like this, is that for at least the first few years, you want to grow slowwwly, you want to know who you can count on when it comes to cleanup or some other odd things that need to be done at the start or the finish, when you learn as a group, it makes for
a solid good time for most everyone involved, especially when a few chores are spread evenly. Organized but not pushy, Easy Going bunch.

If you guy's want to put something together, I will help if you want it over here in central Oregon.;)

I see lots of you camped out in this forum, Please post your idea of what you want out of the 2011 shoot/camp out etc.

My Idea has always been a low buck, fun time for everyone. There will NOT be a list of who paid or not, all you have to do is show up and enjoy.

I am all ready to have the best shoot ever as getting my knees replaced and so much less pain, I will not be on any Morphine, instead, I'm 100lbs lighter and my brain, much sharper.

A number of Men have pm'ed me about this years shoot, If you have any Questions you think I might be able to answer, please feel free to pm me .
Most of the pm's I got were wanting to camp at the Island and shoot at the pits and surrounding area.

OR, I can butt out of all the shoot BS and just go on enjoying this area with a few friends.

Wow, y'all's memories are sooo shot. Fry shot MY Garand. Tailback, that's me. BTW, the match was set up as "shoot 2 rounds, reload, carry on." That meant because I missed once I had to reload 2 times and still came out 5th with my Garand.

I'd have been just fine with pulling out the Larue stealth upper Mike Rock Barreled 2stage Holliger match trigger AR that was in the back of my truck. I even had some ORNG shooting team 75gr match bullets in there.

Kinda felt it was against the "spirit" of a FAL get together, also I hadn't shot my Garand at more than 50 yards since I had her sexy body restocked. In fact, just thinking 'bout it makes me wanna open the safe and caress her. Gotta go...

Actually, I shot Rich of Oregon's rifle that day. Uncle Jeff had stuck a cartridge on an over-pressure firing in my rifle, and I had stuck a cartridge in my back-up with another over-pressure firing (same crappy ammo).

I would have bitched about a heavy rifle if I were going somewhere (like SOF run, for example), but for laying in the grass and shooting? Probably not.

I just got my ass kicked fair and square. Too bad it was you...

Well, it's good to see you guy's posting. Opie, it is about time that you got to come to a camp and shoot, maybe 2011 is your year eh? Hope you can make it.

brunop, how do you like moderating? I was a little shocked to see a busy, busy, man like you on this team, bet you like sneaking around on the boards? I think you would be a good mod here, have not seen you cut anyones throat yet, that's cool. I mod on two other sites, when asked, I thought it would boost my computer skills, it has, have been learning to build my own site, just practice but fun.

Want to wish all of you folks Happy Holidays and looking forward to an enjoyable time with Some of you this spring or summer.

I got in from a meeting at 11:30 PM tonight, and just got done with emails from today (well, all that I'm going to answer today...). I've got a lot of late nights lately. I'm not doing much moderating unless I happen onto a thread where someone is assing out. I'm definitely not looking for people's misbehavior - I've got my own problems. I'm modding because I got a PM from Jen asking me to help out. I said yes. Hasn't cost me much time so far, but I'm not a technical user and I'm not merging threads or cutting posts or anything.

I'm hoping to come to the shindig this summer. I've got to try and pay Pluskat back, you know. I'll probably buy some Bushmills and leave it laying around someone's tent door. He's probably hoping they don't sell that stuff in gallon jugs...

Well, despite all the bitchin' after last year's "event"....I'm still hoping somthing happens this summer. Can't blame brunop for not wanting to orchestrate anything. He tried and the sun wouldn't cooperate and stay up long enough for all events.

Tat2 won't be allowed to bring his comp'd Glooook if we do any handgun stuff. I'm not complaining mind you, it's just that there was a disproportionate amount of after-event-whining about the "small caliber" rifles used, compared to the lack of whining about his near-racegun.....(and also whenever I get spanked that hard on the pistol range I need to blame it on someone's gear advantage, or, my gear failure....couldn't possibly have been his shooting ability)

I'd request we all look at the Sisters venue again as that seemed to have the right balance of camping and shooting fun. If we go there this year, range Nazi's will be lashed to a log and set into that quiet stream we had behind camp. Erik(sp) and Karl(sp) can actually show up for a whole hour at the end of the weekend if they plan it right! Little wussy-boys who wear cologne that smells like cat urine and want to complain about how it's not fair that my rifle is "lighter" will be allowed to use my 11yr old daughter's Cricket .22 rifle....with a pink stock. (no brunop, I'm not talking about YOU....well, maybe a little I am) I know, I know....overloaded round.....unfamiliar rifle....blah blah blech! ;)

Anywho....I'm a peacemaker as you all know, not one who enjoys confrontation, so I'll just say that while I don't want to be "the guy" to start the party planning, I'll help in any way I can. I nominate Snowhawk to be this year's Sorority Chair.

Last year wasn't the abortion that some people have made it out to be:

1) it ran late. By about an hour

2) the one or two people who thought they were going to use optics on the King Shot got their feelings hurt - in spite of the multiple posts in the Shoot Thread where we said it was (and always has been) Iron Sights. Turns out that I was wrong on one count: it hadn't always been iron sights, and I shouldn't have made the change - especially since vanillagorilla (for one) wasn't going to use a scope - but a red dot. The 'zero-magnification' sights shoulda been allowed as I think back...

3) the rifle raffle happened with precious few people present (see #1 above)

After the event, it was further soured (?) by some people speaking freely about different rifle calibers, comped this-and-that, and their various thoughts about what was 'fair', 'expected', etc.

This is normal in my book, but some people were more bent about it than others, and this is my fault: if the competitive aspect goes up, the clarity on rules for weapons, etc. should have gone up. Categories, or whatever.

Now, if we are going back to the Sisters/quarry shoot (which I also took the lead on setting up), then maybe no one cares. IIRC, Sportsnut and JerryMRC and others shot FALs with scopes on them in the same events that others were shooting iron sights. Some people shot Mosins, and some people shot ARs. It was all good, because that was the point: shoot and have fun. No trophies except the King Shot Garbage Can Lid - though we did keep score on a piece of scratch paper that day for other events.

There were some positives about last year's shoot:

1) Lots of new shooters/Filers showed up. Pretty dang cool
2) Women's category: Captain Airyca (cool chick with a Mosin), Mrs. MRC, 4x401's daughter and niece, vanillagorilla's better half. Very cool
3) Stand-by events went properly (drop 10, surplus/bolt-gun race, etc.), and new events (SOF, Handgun) went properly (and were fun)
4) Hanging out the night before
5) Great lunch
6) Cool new people

I'm posting this so whomever (snowhawk jockey) decides to help this event forward this summer will consider two things:

1) there are many competitive shoots around the western United States. Many people here have competed in one form or another, but most people are coming to this thing to shoot, laugh, and eat - not get wound up in a competition other than a friendly competition, and

2) so that the same person will ADVERTISE to the participants that there are no categories, no rules, and no trophies - which will let some people decide if they even want to come out or not. It will make it clear what type of event we are going for, and what it is NOT. It will also clear the air in a way that if Pluskat can shoot his pea-shooter that fast again, no one will be sad that they didn't 'win' the event. And if I happen to run a FAL faster, it is to his DOUBLE ETERNAL SHAME that my MAN'S RIFLE is faster than his poodle-shooter. :]

Note: I still like the third or fourth weekend of June.

my MAN'S RIFLE is faster than his poodle-shooter.
While I have not had the fortune to bring a poodle in line with the front post, I know a nice 3 point who would...if he could...argue that HE at least, could give a good damn about caliber. Hey, ya know all those guys that barely stand above 5 feet and drive those ridiculously lifted Fal's...er, 4x4's to "compensate"?

and....don't crayfish on VG and his sight hissy that day. When he didn't like the way the other kids were playing, he did the grown up thing, took his ball and went home. It's a historical fact at this point. We may not like it....HE may not like it....but it happened. Don't give him a pass!

As to the "good things" from this last year's event....I'll agree with most of 'em listed except....the girls. I'm married to one and have two of 'em as daughters but other than that, they're icky and I don't want 'em around when I'm shooting and drinking. (how's that for a fuse starter?)

Ghandi was a brave, brave man. And while he took a beating more than once, he turned down leadership posts within the hated Brit government. He (not single-handedly) drove out the largest empire on earth in spite of the fact that his people didn't have weapons. Ghandi = WIN.

I've got steel to share if we need it. But there have been some cool shoots I've been to that included cardboard backers with paper plates on them. Just the right size at 100 to make it interesting, white gives good background to a black iron sight, and you don't get any feedback when you shoot them - you can't see the holes at that distance - so you are on or you are not.

This requires scoring, of course, but was very effective for that particular deal.

Pluskat ran the handgun thing like a rockstar, and while long, it went off without a hitch.

We don't use the phrase "rockstar" anymore. I gave that up too.

It took so long because everyone was "elsewhere" when it was their turn to shoot.....(and I AM complaining!) Chasing down "competitors" and holding up the stage for them to be found, and then for them to get their crap together and show up at that bay was counterproductive to say the least.

IF.....we do something that "structured" again, I say that we don't try to run it while another event is going on, and....if you ain't there when it's your turn to shoot, you forfeit that stage.

You are makin this too easy:

1. This gig will always run at a net "loss" since we can't take home our still loaded cartridges.

2. We loooovvee the mighty steel collection. That is what makes this a "shoot" and not just a get together.

3. I'll be working up a job listing and see what volunteers are available for them and go from there. If the job fills, the "stage" runs, no volunteer, no stage. By stage, I mean anything that takes a body and some action to produce. So everything from smoking ribs and fatties, to running a shoot segment, gets a title and job description and maybe a volunteer to pull it off.

I am still in the philosophical stage and am only working up to the whimsical stage, since it is damn cold. Once I can get some time behind the butt(FAL Buttstock for the rest of youse) I am sure my creative juices will flow like saliva over fattys and ABTs...:fal:

It took so long because everyone was "elsewhere" when it was their turn to shoot.....(and I AM complaining!) Chasing down "competitors" and holding up the stage for them to be found, and then for them to get their crap together and show up at that bay was counterproductive to say the least.

IF.....we do something that "structured" again, I say that we don't try to run it while another event is going on, and....if you ain't there when it's your turn to shoot, you forfeit that stage.

On the other hand....I'm so piss-poor broke that this year I'm going to shoot the .22 conversion in the Cz and save my $ for .223 ammo so you can all enjoy a repeat of.......

Sounds like fun, just to let you know, I shot a Garand not a FAL and because of the 2 shots then reload requirement I ended up reloading twice. This year if there's the same requirement I'll shoot my poodle gun with a 30 round mag. I figure 44.38 with a Garand and 2 reloads was pretty respectable.

I could be just getting back from MN and might just drop off the
better 1/3'rds around the later half of June and keep driving.

Lets just plan a place and time.
Bring what you can to make things tasty and fun.

Once we get there it will work itself out.

Thought:

Pistol drop can work on times. When you have it, go shoot.
Kinda like "Step on up."(Pluskat would be great at this) Best
8(?) can go HTH later in the day according to times.? Best drop wins.

Glad the consensus is happening. My Gown has a special foot mat, just for these occasions.

Location Location Location!!
Do we want:
Desert with dusty scrub and a spring(Fox Butte/Sandsprings south of Green Mountain),
Mountains with timber and creek/lake(Cascade lake like Davis or the Sisters location), or
Lake with desert(south of Prineville Res, Salt Creek Rd area?).

Pluskat
February 10, 2011, 14:46
As to location....I'm flexible (whoa there Ron) but I'd point out that SHADE is an important consideration that time of year for all us Willamette Valley, vitamin D deprived moles.

Shooting close to camp would edge out the Sisters site, but it had the camping and the privacy issues locked...and shade.

I guess we could import shade and that may be necessary if we want to have the "range" nearer to the camp.

(I vote for the site LEAST liked by fry)

snowhawk jockey
February 10, 2011, 15:57
I am with you on the shade subject. Nothing worse than my plastic pistol getting too hot to hold, let alone that other steel frame jobby-do. The best shade areas are going to be around timber which would lean us away from Prineville resv. I don't like the Desert as much as the Mountains, but the Desert firing lines can be anywhere there is a butte(everywhere) and there is usually room to camp next to the firing line...

No water feature(other than the ice chest and a water hole or two) to hang around in the Desert...

Pluskat
February 10, 2011, 16:17
The "water" that was behind the Sisters camp quite frankly scared me. One slip and you'd be two hundred yards downstream...and dead, before you knew what happened. I "bathed" (whoaa there Ron) in it from the edge, but it was more of me getting near the water and splashing.

I'm personally not opposed to importing shade, but it just "feels" cooler if there are trees. I know three years ago, the only ones shooting in the 104 degree sun near "the pit" were myself, All Fal, brunop, and three of his kids. the rest were back on the island....near water.

That time of year, if you are near still water, like a lake, the skeeters can be merciless. They weren't bad out on the island, but I think near the outer shore of a lake they could be something to contend with.

Not trying to be a cream puff...just making some points for the decision process.

Pluskat
February 10, 2011, 16:22
Hey Dave.....how 'bout you suggest something out P'ville way that's got it all covered.....safe shooting area.....trees/shade and some water? I wouldn't mind seeing your mug again at one of these things. I'll be happy to come over and scout the site and make a report so we've got a second opinion for the others.

brunop
February 10, 2011, 17:12
"...tried normal, didn't take..." my ass. "Tried Sepuku, got the other guy" is more like it. :|

I like mountains/trees/water better than I like desert, but that's just me. I will say that four of us went looking for decent firing lines in wooded areas near water, and that combination doesn't exist in very many places in this state. Water = brush, and that brush jacks up the line-of-sight required for rifles.

I'd like to camp nearer the shooting event than we did when we were at Sisters or at the Island. I just don't want to leave a bunch of steel and other gear lying around for other people to borrow or damage.

What about the Davis Lake area that Snowhawk put up? Anyone have something to say about that?

Edited to add: what about the original pit near All FAL? Isn't there water if we head west from the gravel pit down to the creek? Can people camp down there and then head up to the pit? By driving, of course - not by walking.

It seemed like there were potential campsites up by the range

I would be willing to bivouac in the range area.

Technically, anyone with moveable camp spots(campers,RV's) can unass
the range AO during the live fire sessions, opening more area for camping
at night, and shooting during the day.

A pistol bay/ short range could be made in that area to keep everyone
safe after the days event. Saw a trail to shoot up that no one would
be at risk to do that. Plenty of little hills too.

I don't see why sportsnut couldn't have been smoking fatties while
we were doing the drop evolutions.(Or maybe he was, thats why no shootin'?);) Just sayin, lots o' space up there by the range in Sisters.

I will be scouting the back side of Green Mountain(20 miles east of Bend, south of Hwy20) and the Fox Butte area in the next bit. My focus will be on which of the smaller buttes has the best collection of Ponderosa around the camp and range. There are at least a half dozen buttes out that way, that could fit the bill. I have a feeling we will have the best of both worlds: Timber shade in camp, and over the adjacent firing line, with a clear line of fire over several yards in one direction and a good pistol pit into the butte on the other.
I'll post a pic, from last time I was out, for proper critique.

The second year on the Island I brought my crawdad traps and let me tell ya the critters are huge in Prineville. I have the pictures somewhere to prove it. A few guys here can atest to the size and amount that we pulled out of there.
We had a Salmon and Crawdad feed one night and it was awesome, or at least it was in my mind. I think Jeff's son Jonathon set the record for most crawdads consumed that night.

The weird thing about P-res, is that last year, there were limited numbers of crawfish coming in. The ODWildlife dudes at the boat ramp commented as much when I wanted to take the kids rock flipping. We camped there for several days, thinking we'd get to fill a basket of them and didn't see a single one. The kid's young beach buddy was reeling in the FAT bass on the other hand, right off the beach. Simply casting a yellow roostertail and reeling it home was all it took! Well, that and being 6y/o, the adults just up the beach were getting skunked and glared whenever youngster reeled in another. They's prol'ly usin' wurmz...

Here is a shot off one of the buttes south of Green Mountain, I took whist out wheeling...er sliding around in the Subaru.

snowhawk jockey
February 12, 2011, 18:44
I'll be confirming the backstop options around that butte and two others near it, in the next few days. I think there will be several angles of fire, relative to the firing line/camp location, that have good back stops. I expect to find a couple of looong lines, out to 1000yds++ for those that would like to use .300mag, .338Howitzers or other long range artillery.

This has been a concern from the beginning. When the group was small (in its early years) All FAL was generous enough to actually make a BUNCH of trips from the landing to the island - ferrying people, tents, food/water/beer coolers/rifles, etc. to the island. Then shipping it all back the very next day so we could shoot.

I'm not running the show or making any decisions this year, but I'll probably be camping near the range with whichever of my kids come, and my gear, steel, etc.

I'm sensing possibly two plans underway simultaneously....with one group "doing their own thing" this year. That's cool, but you should really let everyone who's on YOUR side of the line know that that is what's happening so poor Dave's not on here thinking all are involved.

If that ain't the case, then....uh, Dave 'ol buddy.....it ain't been decided yet.

Drill Sargeants long ago imparted the wisdom to not separate
my gear from my person by a few pushups.
However, I can travel light if necessary.

Think I fired less than 100 rounds last year, pistol and rifle.
Don't know about others, but I want to shoot more, compete less.

Thieves can have at my rental car all day long, as long as I got a boat ride.

Hey, BOB weekend, seeming as we have food on the claw? ;)
Bring what you can actually carry? Well, by car to get there, you know.

Setting up a fair guard system for the area is possible.
Time management for guard duty is not restricted to the.mil
I would be more than happy to take watch.
But get caught falling asleep could cost you.

I don't know how the Island works, but will follow the past 2 years

Island is great, but it is six or seven minutes on the water from the launch. And then it is 10 or 15 minutes (IIRC) to the shoot location by car. I don't think a group could set up a shoot and guard it while participating at the island,

UNLESS...

Everyone decided that they were:

1) bringing super minimal gear
2) bringing minimal food/beer/etc. or were willing to hump a lot of stuff on and off the boat
3) willing to leave their vehicles on the County Launch overnight
4) willing to get off the island by 9AM
5) everyone bust their butts to set up shooting stuff by 10 AM
6) happy to shoot paper/cardboard OR have someone stay behind at the shoot location all night

I'm not feeling it. I'd rather just camp at or very, very near the shoot. But I'm not in charge of anything except my kids, so I'll just wait to see what the group decides.

Peace.

I was hoping we could get the original 5-6 members together for an Island trip sometime this summer also. I really don't think we want to try and figure out all the stuff with cars, guns, food, booze and 25 people. Way to much work doing it for that many people.
Just my .02 cents worth.:)

I'm hearing rumblings of an Island Reunion later this summer with the Original Crew/Usual Suspects, but I'm not the chief of that group (I'm not even in the original Original Crew), and I don't know the dates that are being talked about...

But this FAL Shoot isn't that, and I sincerely doubt it is possible to do the things I listed above, let alone advisable and/or desirable:

I can't see getting a shoot going with this many people coming from all over the west - while bringing gear, food, stoves/grills, etc. on top of rifle boxes, ammo cans, tents, AND putting a shoot together.

I'd like to see both events happen.

I'd like to say here that I don't think that we can do water (lake) and shoot and stay close to the range area. Too many people show up to lakes in the summer. Cold, fast moving rivers = mountains, which = not decent shooting range. Slow, flat rivers = mosquitoes, not that interesting, and typically no backstops.

I like water like everybody else, but I'm going to state what I stated the last couple of times: If I'm going to go camping at a lake, I'm taking my wife and kids, and it If I'm camping to shoot and eat BBQ and hang with the guys, water is a plus, but isn't necessary. Just my $0.02...

Edited to add: "I'm hearing rumblings..." = Sportsnut beat me to it. The group should do something with All FAL and the island, but the FAL Shoot should be somewhere near a backstop, and good/tolerable camping access near it.

Just my .02 cents worth.:)

Just to steer this thread back on course:

With all due respect, there are no safe shooting lanes on the Island. The island is great camping, but this is the Oregon FAL Shoot planning thread. Locations that can support shooting AND camping, at the same location, are the subject at the moment.

So, Allfal, the coordinator of the Island camping trip, do yourself and the Island camping attendees a favor, by starting a separate thread to address the details of that occasion. It would be sad to attempt to divide the group over the selection of the same date for the Island adventure. I would like to attend the Island trip, but wouldn't be available for 6/18 to do so.

I wouldn't want anyone to confuse the two separate occasions as the same event.

Back to the regularly scheduled banter.:D

This.

As far as I can tell, the 18/19 June date is the FAL Shoot, and is happening somewhere (to be decided) that allows for camping near the shooting, and people's trucks to be on-site with: grills, ABTs, coolers, ABTs, camp chairs, ABTs, and ABTs. And most importantly, lets not forget the fatties. please don't forget the fatties...

I'm liking the butte/Green Mountain area, and I'm liking the Sisters Gravel Pit area.

Tuscan Raider and others have mentioned that they'd like to "shoot more and compete less." Good point - I was thinking that the Gravel Pit has the added benefit of multiple range opportunities: a guy could be shooting the Drop 10 (or whatever we decide to do for 'competition'), and other people could be in a different area shooting different stuff.

If the buttes are so located that this applies there, too, then it would come down to camp-friendliness in my book.

All Fal 'ol buddy....

I know you're feeling isolated and all being "over there" but...I'd gladly swap with you and live on that side of the hills. These guys are great and all, (well SOME are) but they aren't worth living on the soggy side of the hills.

Sportsnut says he's gonna get a "core group" island thing planned and I promise you I'll be there. I want to talk "Stratospheric Geo-Engineering" with you. I held out on disbelieving that as long as I could, but NO MORE! Have you seen the Michael Murphy film "What in the World are They Spraying"?

Anyways, for all the reasons previously mentioned, I gotta agree that the Island pretty much doesn't do it for a "shoot" weekend, but I'm definitely down with it for an "inner circle" camp weekend on that nugget of land.

If the "5th Annual" is even remotely close to you....you gotta make the drive. You are missed.

Although it is a family custom, I promise not to add bacon, ham or sausage to the pancakes on Saturday morning. And, if the curry master crown is passed this year, I will be using chicken, so no worries about tasty eats on Friday night.

I can find some turkey bacon to wrap the ABT in for ya Pluskat and I believe there is some turkey or all beef sausage out there. Would not want you to go hungry.

I'm ready to shoot where ever there's a good butte for a back stop. Definatly into the shooting more than competion. The more lead I see down range the better.

I'm still on the fence about going. I've been reading this thread with interest, and I'll have to loose a weekends worth of income and spend anouther weekends worth to fund the trip. However, it does sound like good fun. I know a dozen guys up here with FALs, and have talked about a caraven down. Once you've locked in a location I'll pass the info on and see how many will commit to the trip.
Info we'd like to have is, besides the location, what all do we need to bring? I mean beside an FAL and ammo of course.
I can camp out in the back of my truck, but it's a 4X2, and not really built for off road stumping. The sooner I have this info the sooner I can get a list of FALers to bring along. And will this be a two day or four day event? I need to know how many days to put in for.
By the way, Brunop, did you get that Ruger yet? I haven't heard anything from you about it.

308/223shooter - Just picked it up - thanks! Just as you described, and a sweet little rifle.

I think half the people show up Friday mid-day, and half the people show up Friday after work. Campfire and food Friday night, shoot Saturday, leave Sunday. Some guys bailed by 7:00 AM on Sunday, and some (like me) made it out by noon or so.

Since I'm missing work Friday anyway, I'm going to get there early enough to shoot and fool around with my kids before the setting up or what-have-you gets started.

In the past we've coordinated a food plan, but I don't know what is happening this year. Sounds like we have willing contributors, so that's a major plus - these guys can grill. And probably cook, too.

You don't have to bring anything except food, water, rifle, ammo, and a place to sleep.

Tailback....yep....beef is a go and it doesn't have to be Kosher. (that just means it's been blessed by a Rabbi, nothing I'm following) Thanks for looking out for me. I was thinking the same thing...that I'd bring along a steak so I'd have something to cook....unless of course Sportsnut does some more of those smoker beer-can chickens. Heading to the range this weekend to get some cold-weather shootin' in. C'mon June!

Question: are we doing the 'tweener route? I mean where we pretend we're not really competing even though there is a timer and people are writing down scores (and posting them endlessly on the Files  )? This is cool with me, as I don't want to show up and shoot dirt clods at random. I'm in it to beat Pluskat's AR, anyway...

We can 'prove' the 'non-competitive' nature of the event by doing what we did in previous events: allow scopes and irons and FALs and comped ARs to all run in the same place and the same contest. This will virtually ensure that scoped, low-recoil rifles will 'lead the pack', but I don't care if Pluskat beats me again. I'm just trying to head-off the comments that will inevitably come if someone shows up with a comped, free-floated HB AR and beats everyone's asses. I. Won't. Care. But some people might? Just thinking out loud.

A couple of summers ago I tried to 'penalize' people by 10 seconds or something if they shot an AR (in an effort to "encourage" people to shoot FALs and other 'surplus' rifles) but people told me I was an uptight douchebag and that I should let it all happen together. So it was.

I don't care either way - just trying to make an opportunity for this to get dealt with before the fact, rather than after (or during - like last summer).

gaijinsamurai
February 24, 2011, 11:04
Time might be an obstacle to doing it, but maybe an "open class" shoot, in which people could use whatever they want, and a separate shoot limited to iron sighted FALs and equivilants would be an idea.

Tailback
February 25, 2011, 03:44

gaijinsamurai
February 25, 2011, 07:07
I wholeheartedly agree, Tailback. Those events and the pistol competition were my favorites.

The "Soldier of Fortune" event was okay too. One thing I would have changed, is to do away with the constant switching back and forth between pistol and rifle. I can't picture a real scenario in which the shooter alternates weapons every two or three shots.

I been thinkin' along those lines for a bit and figger'in that hav'in the "stages" open for practice runs all day. The timer/shot counter will be on hand for anyone that wants to go "on record" for that gun's class.

Pistol, rifle irons, rifle open, rifle manual action, DMR/SS...

I like The idea of having the "stages" open for practice with the competition an option. I want to go on record but also burn up some ammo for fun. Would love to see some sort of night fire option also. maybe a record for the longest muzzle blast.

brunop
February 26, 2011, 03:16
I like the 'open' all day long idea, too. We have never had that much steel before where we could have multiple 'stages' running at the same time. If there are enough targets for two drop events running all day, that is brilliant.

I don't need to do an SOF event of any type. It was an experiment that ended up getting neutered by two factors: a) Range Safety Nazis, and b) a 'need' to score conveniently while we were short on steel.

On a serious note, we should consider this for whatever conditions we put down this year. We shouldn't let mag changes or anything else hurt good rifles like Garands or SKSs since people are going to shoot whatever they like (it's not a FAL shoot so much...). I think Fry may have shot Tailback's Garand last year, and he did pretty well, but we should let rifles come as they are without extra conditions this year. Just an idea for Snowhawk Jockey and Pluskat and 4x401 to consider.

There is certianly no reason we can`t have a competition of the "shoot what `ya brung" type.
IMHO, we are all "shooters" cut from the same cloth.
I seem to remember Snowhawk making a damn fine showing shooting an AK (off hand W/ irons no less) on the drop 8 year before last.
I don`t give a tinkers damn what anyone shoots. Lets just get together and have some fun.:)

Would it be possible to just camp and not compete?
I mean sure, couple sausages goin' at it for bragging
rights is fine by me, hell I'll watch any bet or smack talk
shoot down. Or if ladies are attending, won't try to give
comparison.

Any old piece of steel will do for pistol. I think we can do both

I don't need outside assistance, I just need a .22 of one sort or another. Didn't you miss the garbage can lid last year? :]

I'll admit that if we are going to have 'open' runs all day long, I'm going to bring an AK, FAL, and AR and shoot them all. That would be a ton of fun.

One year we had to shoot from some position other than prone. That was when Snowhawk Jockey gave the lesson with the AK iirc.

Then there was a year when Oregon FALer gave a smokin' lesson on shoot and move with the giraffe-camo FAL. I'd like to see a pic of that rifle so I could try to copy it on one of mine.

This sounds cool.

@ Tuscan Raider - I think that's what's shapin' up. Not much (or any) competition. I'm bringing a timer in case someone wants to get timed. But I'm picturing lots of runs with different rifles which makes it about shooting instead of about competition, and it sounds like other people are thinking the same thing. I may run the timer on myself just to see the difference between each rifle type - that would be interesting. And I'm DEFINITELY going to race Pluskat with his own SKS - just so I don't have to watch last year's numbers keep getting posted.

Besides, is there a handgun competition that won't be about winning 2nd if Tat2 shows up?

I'm bringing some targets and a timer. And I'll do whatever the three guys who are running it say.

This is starting to sound like more fun than I should miss. Not having any experiance with the climate down there, and being from SW Wa. I need to know what to prepare for. Should I drive my truck and sleep in it, or drive my car and sleep in a tent? I can get more crap, I mean "gear" in the truck, and it'll most likely deal with dirt roads better. And, I can hual more heavy items as well, like ammo and such.
I'm also still waiting to hear back from other Wa. FALers to see if they want to meet up for a caravan style cruise to the range.

February 27, 2011, 23:09
This is so much fun that people come from Idaho, Washington, Colorado, and Utah to shoot in it. And maybe some places I didn't hear about.

Same type of weather as if you were in Yakima: hot and dry in the summer. The dirt roads are passable in a car (Snowhawk Jockey and others got there in a Subaru), and the weather is mild enough that you will be plenty comfortable in a tent, which is what most people bring.

Just an idea for Snowhawk Jockey and Pluskat and 4x401 to consider.[BR][BR]

Well, to Pluskat's credit he did damn well with the poodle shooter. Fry and I shot my Garand and I'm perfectly willing to supply my rifle and some ammo to Pluskat to beat my time from last year under the same conditions. My luck is he would freaking do it. He rocked it with the AR last year and until someone knocks him off that pedestal IMHO he earned all the bragging rights. I have a feeling that with a nice poodle gun Tat2 would smoke him but we'll just have to see....

March 03, 2011, 01:02
I won't shoot the Garand under the "same conditions", because I don't want to get Garand thumb trying to be a fast loader. I'm not familiar enough to try to rock with my M1.

And I think Pluskat is going to try to win it all with an SKS just to say he did it. I'm going to try to uphold the FAL's honor, but if we stick with the 'multiple runs' idea, I'm going to shoot an AR, too.

Just to beat that number that keeps popping up.

Thanks for the compliments Tailback!

(I'm a fragile individual and anything to help build my self esteem and confidence is welcome.)

I, like brunop, will have to pass on the offer/challenge to race with the Garand. I have seen some nasty pictures of "the thumbs of those who do not know"...and I'm in that category. (convenient pathetic cop-out to be sure)

I would love to put a clip through a Garand though since I've never shot one....if you're offering outside of competition.

Absolutely you can run a clip or two through. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how nice they are to shoot. The recoil is very mild for a 30.06 and if you like 2 stage match triggers you'll LOVE the trigger on my Garand.

M1 thumb is overblown, you can use the Bruce Lee "knife palm" method, or the "Hail Mary" thumb push method. Bruce Lee is slower but safer, Hail Mary is faster but more dangerous. Either way, you have to be completely oblivious to the prospect of getting your thumb mashed to have it actually happen. I think most of those stories come from evil Garand owners telling some newbie to "just push down on it till it locks" while winking at his buddies and taking a swig off the bottle of moonshine. (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Dang it - like I need another type of rifle to bring to the party. But I brought it last year and didn't shoot it. Maybe this is my year.

Aren't we trying to be less competitive? I would gladly bring ammo
or chip in to shoot for fun on a Garand course. Never shot one either.
Just for fun drop 10, because you have to reload.

Small, short class while having appetizer's would be informative and fun.

Yeah - I was thinkin' on bringing one to shoot and share - not to compete with. I said above I'm not racing anyone with that rifle.

Garand loading is pretty simple really.

Just be sure to hold your fingers against the side of the rifle with some pressure against the stock, that way when the bolt releases you can stop it, then just pull the hand away and off you go.

Shlomo's Garannd-fu is the strongest of all, perhaps he will bless this thread with wisdom!

That's a heck of an idea TR, I'd be willing to do such a class on the Garand if there isn't anyone more informed than me. Wouldn't be a bad idea to do the same thing for the AR, FAL, AK, and HK-91/G-3 since I saw all of those at last years shoot.

Just covering safety, loading, field stripping, and basic maintenance could help a lot of the youngsters.

I have four racks of five resettable Biathlon 3" steel targets for 22LR. You bet we can make trouble with them. How about 25 and 50 yds for Jrs and short barrels, then 100 and 200 for long barrels. That should set a challenge for the 'rimmers. I have set them all in a row and gotten a tired finger and smoking chamber trying to drop them all in a run.

I promise not to forget my 10/17HM2 semi-auto laser or my 17HMR turn-bolt laser, since they make tiny groups...
I guess I better test the 17's to see if they perforate the plates! Can't have that slowing down the flying fun brass.

On another note, will anyone be packing a generator strong enough to run my little 110v wire feed welder? It could prove useful if we have some of the poppers turn into spinners like last year.

BrunoP, Do you still have the 8" and 10" swingers that we used in Sisters? They were painfully challenging with the proper angle and plate exposure.

I bet there could be a couple of seminar/clinics on the various aspects of men playing with guns in the forest. Everything from the above, to how to clock a scope for long range, to bump firing a 1911(gghhiilliiee gonna teach that one?) Very cool idea to share the collective wealth of knowledge with the rest of us that are clueless. More seminar ideas or skilled volunteers?

Is it June yet?

Is it decided that we are going south of the butte like Snowhawk Jockey said, or are we going to camp at the creek and shoot up the hill, or are we going to camp up the hill near the quarry?

Or is there something else?

Yes, and where is south of what butte?

snowhawk jockey
March 07, 2011, 18:41
"south of the butte" is between Pine Mountain (was I calling it Green mountain, before?) and Fox Butte, 20 miles east of Bend and a few miles south of Millican/Hwy 20. The snow is melting off and I will get a chance to get out there on Thursday for some scouting and firing line/camp photos. June is a long way off for my schedule, so PLENTY of time to plan where to dig the latrine.

I'm for a place that has long, long ranges available if it is possible. It would be cool to put up full-torso targets at 500 or 600 and see what the FALs will do. The little guns are invited to shoot that far, too, of course.

I was also thinking of longer ranges in case a guy wanted to shoot scoped bolt guns.

I just want to camp where we're shooting from. No running back-and-forth for me.

I'm betting on two things:

1) 4x401 sets his tent up away from other people so he can shoot out of his sleeping bag,

2) 4x401 goes and purchases a new sleeping bag after the weekend because of all the melt-holes where his brass landed on the cover of his old sleeping bag

:]

308/223 - You could probably shoot out of the bed of your truck for some things, but if you're shooting the steel and stuff that everyone else is shooting, you're probably going to have to get out of your truck for that little part of the weekend and make it over to the shooting mat or whatever thing we're using to keep it organized.

I can assure that this location will have mile+ line potential, for those interested and equipped. It will require some elevation gain(target or line) for the firing line to get above the brush tops. There should be plenty of opportunity for that. Personally, I would like to find a safe line to develop some defilliaed(can someone correct my spelling please?) indirect fire on an area target. Anyone have an extra car that needs to be custom ventilated?

Additionally, I am parting with my '69 full size slide-in camper for little money or small trade. If no one wants it, I might bring it out to rain metal on. When we are done, it could collapse nicely into a pile in the back of the truck and go to the dump.

Made it out to the AO for some scouting. The Butte its self and surrounding roads are closed until March 31st by the Odf&w for winter deer/elk range. I did find a location not far from the butte that was VERY interesting. Two different established "deer camp" type locations, in timber, with firing lines adjacent to the sites. No water, sage in all 360*, with terrain that could catch bullets. There is one firing line that goes all the way into the next county... Anyone got some BP artillery?

So, when I get a chance to boot up the pictures, you'll see'um.

I keep hoping someone is going to show up with an Anzio IronWorks 20mm rifle. That would kick SO MUCH ASS!!!

Meanwhile, I'll stick to the little rifles I have.

$3.45/round of PMC .50 BMG seems like a pretty good deal.

I'd buy 10 rounds to shoot if there were a .50 someone would let us play with.
