That Was Quick… For First Time Ever Obama Administration Cuts Medicare Treatment For Cancer Patients
Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, August 15, 2010, 9:31 AM

HERE COME THE DEATH PANELS…

For the first time in history Medicare will not cover an FDA-approved anti-cancer therapy.
Doug Ross reported:

Just days after the recess appointment of Donald Berwick, the controversial new head of Medicare and Medicaid, the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance posted the following grim news: for the first time in history, an FDA-approved anti-cancer therapy may not be covered by Medicare.

Provenge, a vaccine to treat the recurrence of prostate cancer, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)… Medicare usually covers the cost of FDA-approved anti-cancer therapies. However, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is still reviewing whether it will cover Provenge, and at what rate.

The CMS statute states that Medicare must cover therapies that are reasonable and necessary, while the FDA is instructed to approve drugs that are safe and effective. Because of the conflicting Federal coverage and approval requirements, there are some non-FDA approved drugs (called off-label drugs) that are paid for by CMS. However, with respect to Provenge, it appears that CMS is arguing that while the treatment is safe and effective, it may not be reasonable and necessary. For the first time, an FDA approved anti-cancer therapy may not be covered by Medicare.

A life-saving cancer treatment “may not be reasonable and necessary”? Gee, that kind of decision-making by an unelected federal bureaucracy certainly sounds like a death panel to me. That may be just the beginning of the camel sticking its nose under the tent.http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/2010/08/that-was-quick-for-first-time-ever-obama-administration-cuts-medicare-coverage-for-cancer-patients/

Yeah, gatewaypundit is a good source for getting your news.   Or maybe not.

BTW, don't you think that it's feaking beyond hypocritical to complain that medicare is only going to reimburse 80% of the cost of a really expensive treatment that only extends life for 4 months, while backing the GOP whose goal it is to end medicare?

Judicious spending is not part of our government's vocabulary.
Pork barrel sending is.
Death panels are now in effect,,, I can't remember a time when it was not so,,,we all die even if we blow our wad trying not to,,, but it should not be a government decision, a government that laughs at the Hippocratic Oath or any oath for that matter.
We have developed medical prognostication to a level for some degree of probability, a probability of survival should be the continuum treatment hallmark.,,, living screwed up and broke compounds the dilemma.
When we revive the custom of burying the dead's treasure with them we will see grave robbing come back in vogue to get into medical school.

Berwick was an Obama recess appointment because he's too controversial to have been approved even by the Obama fellating Democrats.
Berwick does believe in "death panels" and is a huge fan of the national health system of Great Brittan which has one of the owest cancer survival rates of any first world nation. The reason: drugs aproved and available elsewhere are not paid for under their system as they are deemed too expensive treatments.
Weenie and Willy who seem to defend Obama endlessly can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that medicare is is only a start, the aim of The Won is to be running health care in the future. Let's hope neither of you get to meet the death panel that decides you're no longer useful and should get end of life counciling instead of something that could save your life.

As usual, you post BS, get called on it and post more BS to cover it. Spamming the site with blogs from gatewatpundit and americanthinker is not intelligent discussion. It's propaganda. Almost everything I've seen you spam from these sites in non factual and pure spin.

For once man up and admit you were suckered in by a blog giving out bad information.

In lieu of a absent Obama value system the Marxist value system will be used for all evaluations.

At least it is a start.
Once they completely purge medicare, and social security we will stop running deficits.

It's you who are being suckered. Berwick is bad news, that's why he was a recess appointment.
Berwick is a proponent of the British health system in which the government owns the insurers, the hospitals the Doctors and decides who gets what.
Berwick is a proponent of health rationing; I.E. decisions made for you by health panels of faceless government bureacrats.
Berwick is a proponent of redistribution in healthcare and all in all is the right man for the job of moving our healthcare system into the Obama vision of American Healthcare which the goal is to eliminate free choice and insinuate the government between you and your Doctor.
In short, it isn't a matter of cost cutting in Medicare, the goal is the entire system will be "medicare," so to speak.
The denial of one cancer treatment is just the burner sparking on the ignite mode.
As The Wall Street Journal put it:
"So no wonder the White House wanted to dodge a public debate and Senate vote on Dr. Berwick. He's a too obvious reminder of the price controls and care restrictions that are inevitable with ObamaCare."

Then again, it's probably all George Bush' fault and St. Paul will descend from the Heavens on his unicorn to save us.
