Those programs and the monies that were appropriated and borrowed were more readilly accounted for at the time, plus the nation had resouces in abundance that were needed by the worlds warring nation and I believe there were tangible evidences of effectiveness and waste,,, the process those funds were in aid of took a world war to solve and made the spending seem worthwhile.
When the nation quit hurtin' things looked mighty fine and we had whooped ass.
Maybe there is a hurtin'/cost offset coralation.
I remember how painful gettin' used to a zipper fly was,,, but we got the hang of it.

Funny how history repeats itself. Obama does seem to be recreating the mistakes of the Roosevelt Administration.
FWIW, I have an original newspaper from the depression that has that exact cartoon in it.
I love the Pinkys comments.
Commrads Lenin and Stalin are amused as well.

Sure, instead of Lenin and Stalin, its Putin and Medvedev today.
But back in 1934 there was another character in play, a VERY IMPORTANT ONE. He too spent millions REBUILDING his country, that was in WORSE economic and political shape than EITHER, with GREATER SUCCESS, yet the Communists and Democratic Socialists eventually destroyed HIM and HIS PEOPLE.
Who fits this role today?
