This is just stunning on it's face. The congressional travel office refused to allow any GOP members to visit the gulf to observe the situations. Can you farkin' believe that?
This is hilarious. Suddenly, the House Democrats are rewriting the rules for funded travel because a group of Republicans (and one Democrat) wants to visit the Gulf in July. Well, “rewriting” makes it sound like something official and accountable is going on. “Remaking it up as they go along” would apparently be more accurate.
The little shabby digs and jabs just keep coming out of the woodwork. Last week, the left-wing blogosphere was atwitter over the story that Bobby Jindal had activated fewer than half the national guardsmen Obama had authorized for Louisiana. Why, there Jindal was, complaining and bellyaching about how little Obama had done, and the hypocritical low-life hadn’t even called up the Guard!
Fox News bothered to get Jindal’s perspective on the issue, along with that of the other Gulf Coast governors, who also had called up far fewer guardsmen than they were authorized to. Fox talked to the Defense Department as well. As a moment’s reflection would suggest, there was no good reason to call up more of the Guard, since it doesn’t have the tools or expertise needed for the actual problem.
The Guard is already piling up sandbags, and Jindal had it start – in mid-June – making the sand berms he’s been pushing for, until the federal government shut that operation down. What Jindal needs is offshore skimming and berms. The Guard can’t skim for him, and the feds control whether the Guard can make berms for him. Why make the taxpayer fork over for an expanded call-up that won’t address the problem?
All this petty nonsense is of a piece with Obama’s unleaderly comments in Wisconsin today. John Boehner’s take afterward – that it was simply a childish performance – about covers what there is to say about it.
Meanwhile, Gulf businesses that have been hurt due to loss of tourism may not be compensated from the $20 billion BP shakedown fund. This is interesting, as it certainly isn’t hard to make the case that they are losing business as a direct and inevitable result of the oil spill. On the other hand, any rig workers idled by the Obama drilling moratorium won’t be losing their income due to inevitable consequences of the oil spill, but due to an entirely discretionary decision by the administration. Nevertheless, early in June, the administration promised that those workers would be compensated from the BP shakedown fund.
Check with the inmates for your lights-out curfew. They’re in charge of the asylum now.
