Flyers: Available below
Range: Lost Canyon near Gunnison, Colorado
Address: 1811 Rd 743, Gunnison, CO 81230
Website: N/A
When: August 29-30, 2009
October 03-04, 2009
October 24-25, 2009
Range Fee: None.
Camping available: Primitive camping on nearby public lands. There are at least two commercial campgrounds in and around Gunnison.
Hotels: 7.5 miles / 20 minutes away, 800 rooms in Gunnison.
Directions: Take highway 50 to Gunnison. Turn North on Main Street (also highway 135). Go North 1.6 miles, then turn right onto CR-10. Go for 2.7 miles and bear right onto Lost Canyon Road. Go about 3.2 miles to ranch gate. Look for signs.
GPS: N38 degrees 36 minutes 45 seconds, W 106 degrees 51 minutes 34 seconds.
State Laws to be aware of: Denver has an Assault Weapons Ban for rifles with mags over 20 rounds, also mags over 20 rounds are banned. Although there are provisions for a non-resident passing through, it is best to keep weapons cased and simply avoid stopping in Denver altogether. They will arrest you and make you hire a lawyer to get your rifle back. There is no state Assault Weapons Ban. Open carry is legal in Colorado except in some cities (don't press your luck in cities, they'll find something else to charge you with). Concealed carry requires a permit. No loaded long arms in vehicles – chamber must be empty (hunting law), handguns OK. Check local laws.
Misc: We will shoot at 25 meters. Bring a .22 rimfire rifle and some spare mags and gain valuable marksmanship skills without using up your expensive center fire ammo. You will want about 400 - 500 rounds. GI sling highly recommended. If you have a new high power rifle or new mags you want to check out at 25-meters, that’s OK too. While it is expensive, there is no better way to learn if you can depend on your equipment than putting 400 - 500 rounds through it in two days. Afterwards, you‘ll most likely change something!
Lost Canyon is a cold range. No Tracer, AP, or incendiary ammo allowed (fire hazard, hard on steel targets). Attracts a magnet is OK. No shooting over the backstop.
Please leave your rifles in the car until asked to bring them to the firing line. Please, no handguns (concealed or open) on the firing line. Bring layered clothing, a windbreaker, and lightweight gloves, eye protection, hearing protection. Elevation is at 8131 feet and winter can arrive anytime, even during summer months. Bring winter gear. Weather can range from sunny in the 90’s to overcast and windy with chill factor well below freezing. Expect afternoon summer thunderstorms. The October shoot will likely be held in Winter conditions. Be prepared! Bring rain gear, a lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. A shooting jacket will be extremely helpful if shooting a high power rifle, and a shooting mat, e.g., a 4’ x 7’ carpet scrap, will be desired for prone and sitting. For more on what to bring see www.rwva.org.
There will be a 200 yard speed shoot for Red hats, 0range hats, and riflemen attendees at the end of each days Appleseed Clinic.
