grandpa probably passed away, and the 'kid' sold it to some pawn shop for $300 worth of crack?

you really-really need to know your stuff to avoid a forgery at this kind of price.. the provenance would be critical?

This is one for the Xray. Considering there are only 176 Singers ever made, I'd say there are less than 10 original complete guns out there. Last time I saw one for sale was in SGN by David Buell out of California for the price of 28K.

The Singer pistol production series ran from number 800001 to 800500. The common thought is that there are 500 specimens out there.

One of the most counterfieted firearms sold. You should always have this weapon in your hand for inspection, prior to purchase. I have heard horror stories of guys who have bought "Rare" pieces, only to find out it aint what it seemed to be. I know a store that has a 1911 for sale, guy says it's all original, a close look at it and it appears it has been refinished. Mind you, it was a good job, however that cuts the value in half.

The math holds up but you have to realize that a significant number of these were handed to guys who went up front and some didn't make it back. Lots more were probably lost, broken, and possibly just worn out - since 1911-A1's were last purchased in 1945 and then used right up to the early 80's (and beyond).

The number that made it from there and then eventually into civilian hands would be rather small.

$36,000 for a 1911 and you STILL got to put decent sights on it.

I bet it needs a trigger job, too...

Prolly not throated for hollowpoints and SWC's either...

Gheeeeezzzzze.....

Oh yeah? Well, I mean, but a Glock will beat any old Singer 1911........

You all forgot to mention Cap'n Crunch, the $2,000,000 gun shredder. Bought as soon as Clinton took power. Almost all the 1911s in Gov. storage went into that mother. Hundreds of thousands of them, Singers included.

Thank a democrat next time you see one.

I thought the Singer had a big "S" logo on the slide, or was that another maker?

Makes me sick every time I think about all those 1911's getting chewed up. What an A-hole. We should do a class action suit because he destroyed tax-payer funded property.

I am by no means an expert on Singer pistols. However a few things caught my attention.

Checkered Mainspring housing
Wide Spur Hammer
Checkered trigger
Matchless finish (though it doesn't look re-finished)

Anyone know anything about these?

To add a little levity to the thread, I'd like to mention that in Nam in 1967 I was issued a Singer 1911 in addition to my M16.

I shot it a few times to make sure it would work, and always carried a tracer one round from the bottom for personal insurance purposes.

Being young and stupid at the time I never liked the idea that I had to rely on a gun that was made by a sewing machine company. Like a good trooper I turned it in when I left. Had to, otherwise I think the govt would have charged me something like $67.

To make matters worse, in those days it would have been no challenge at all to have it follow me home. Oh well.

I saw an original one sell at an auction 3 or 4 yrs ago for $5,000 and it was in pristine condition.
wish I would have had deeper pockets then to bid on it :(

Hello there are 2 Singers in the Woloroc Colt collection near Bartlesville OK. If you ever get a chance you should check it out. There are tool room prototypes and one offs that you will never see any where else. There is a North American 1911 as well. Thanks EX1

That Singer has been on the auction block before. From what I remember, the bid was up to $66k and it still did not sell. THey go for about $70-$80k now.
