FALnoob here.

I have a new DSA STG58 with the traditional long Austrian flash hider. Is it possible to replace this with a properly threaded muzzle brake? If so (and if you're patient enough to tell me or point me in the right direction) how?

gracias!

I have an STG, replaced whatever it came with with something from the DSA website, I think I went for the short Austrian type - sorry, can't quite keep the names straight. The brake unscrews to the left, the opposite we're used to, and uses a 9/16X24 LH thread. So anything with that thread pitch/direction will work fine.

I'd say check out the DSA site, then maybe Midway or Brownells.

Clamp the barrel flats in a sturdy vise.

Use a piece of angle iron of appropriate thickness and length to engage the "tines" of the STG muzzle device. Should unscrew easily, assuming adequate leverage, and assuming that the device is not SILVER-SOLDERED in place.

yeah I guess that's one of the reasons I ask. I don't see any visible solder, but wan't to make sure DSA didn't somehow permanently attach the hider before I try getting it off.

Thank you for the instructional advice. I appreciate it.

Usually there is visible a ring of solder on the soldered DSA guns.

Note that I say USUALLY.

If this is a recently-produced rifle, I can't imagine why there would be any solder involved.

DSA might be able to help you with the production date info if you call-in the serial number.

If I were to install this long lookalike brake, should the ports be facing up/down/left/right or to the corners? + or x (if that makes sense)

Wow !
About everybody else is looking to remove their muzzle brakes and install flashhiders.
You are going exactly the opposite direction.
Well !
You've come to the right place.
Bucking the trends, fighting the status quo, all welcome traits around here.
Unless you turn out to be a dick.
But, welcome in the meantime.
On a semi-auto rifle, I don't think the either the muzzle brake or flashhider will do much. Brakes are sometimes noisier and harder on neighbors at the range with their focused side blasts. Flashhiders look cooler, usually.

I might be a dick but I balance it off with my fine taste in firearms.
