View Full Version : Twist Rate on 308 (Savage 12 FTR)
May 10, 2009, 15:13
I have been thinking about stumping up the $$$ for a nice target bolt action. Maybe really get into some long distance stuff, so was looking at the Savage target rifles as a relatively inexpensive place to start. I took a close look at the 12 FTR Palma, until I noticed the twist rate was 1:13. I am sure that that twist rate is fine for the 155 grain Palma pills, but I think I was heading towards handloading heavier bullets, say the SMK 175 or above.
I would say that I would be lucky to get 168gr SMKs to stabilize in 1:13.
Has anyone tried it ? Any experience ? Opinion ?

i run 175 SMK through a 1:12 barrel. the question would be is it a true 1:13 twist barrel. you could try and run them a little hotter to make it work if the barrel was the right length.

Its a 30" barrel (!).. I think that the whole gun is optimized around the Palma 155 bullet and I think that to keep it super sonic at long range it's loaded pretty hot anyway..

jsut an option, but if you like the savage why not buy a FTR action and Mcgowen or shilen barrel from northlander over on savage shooters.com for about 850.00 then buy the stock you want.
