Ok I'm new and just found this site. I'm going to look at a L1a1 today. What should I look for and what should I avoid. I have olny talked to the guy on the phone and he says the gun was made by FAL. I asked if it was a century and he said no. It has a scope mount and also 4 mags. He's is asking a reasonable price I think for the times right now. He want's 700.00. Let me know, I think I know how to tell if it is an inch or metric. Buy the front sight guards and the stock.

Your seller does not know his ass from a hole in the ground.
"FN" means Fabrique Nationale.
You cant TOUCH a true FN for less than two grand.
This $700 gun the guy is talking about is most likely a "parts gun" put together on a Century International Arms upper receiver.
It MIGHT be an OK shooter.
If you want any truly useful help from us here, you would be well advised to take a dozen or so good pictures of the gun, and post them here. That will give us a lot more upon which to base any subjective opinions.

If an IMBEL, DGFM-FMAP (Unmarked) DSA, or DCI receiver it can be fixed.
Anything else, you are buying a parts kit and rolling the dice

Can't it be a pre-ban FN from a guy without a clue about prices ?

F.N. didn't make L1A1's, so it MIGHT be an F.N., or it MIGHT be an L1A1, but it can't be both and might not be either.
I would certainly find out what it is before purchase, and if possible, arrange for a test fire before purchase, too.

I am assuming I have a inch upper. It is marked Imbel. How do I know what lower I have? I need to replace the safety it is kind of wobbly. I am a gunsmith but just haven't fooled with L1A1 before. I also need to add a different stock and pistol grip rather than the butthole stock. I like the tapco stock butI don't know if it will fit my lower? Any help?Thank you.

Well with the stock replacement you will need to get the required ammount of us parts to make compliant but for the price you got it for with an Imbel receiver I think you did pretty good. Do the mags have a tab on the front or a little sheet metal nipple.
