Hi
I have Stevens book but in it it does not mention what year the Aussie L1A1 rifles started to use their black paint over park as opposed to park only.
I know someone knows?
Thanks
Ian

Prior to 1971 the finish of the rifles was just a dark Phosphating finish.

After 1971 the rifle was phosphated and then had a coating of satin black stoving paint.

FYI the mag shown in your pic is a British made one.

Aussies first painted was AD 7201299 (skennerton, 27). As with the Austrians and Israelis, it is perfectly normal to have mix match parts.

When a new part or a new finish on a part comes down the line, the armorer instructions will be to

1. replace with the new immediately, destroy/turn in the old.

2. replace with the new as needed, but turn in any old spares you already have.

3. use up the old spares first and then start using the new version.

If you want your Aussie gun to look pre 1972, then park. but after 1972 any combination of paint or park.

Even more wild would be a 3-color StG, correct with a mix of paint, hot bluing, and park.
