View Full Version : MSAR mags versus Steyr mags: quality?

How do the MSAR mags stack up against their OEM Steyr cousins? I am going to be purchasing a dozen or so and want to know if it would be better to buy Steyr AUG mags and modify them for an MSAR or if I should just buy the MSAR mags.

Is the quality the same? I have heard of the feed lips on the MSAR mags breaking. Does that happen with Steyr mags as well?

only ones ive had break were the 20s.

MSAR stated that the 7/08 batch of 20s had an improperly functioning mold and the top left side did not heat properly.

it has since been fixed.

the 30s and 42s ran like a top.

from what ive used id say buy whatever is cheaper.

if your msar is a newer one, you shouldn't have to modify the mags. supposedly the aug hammer group will fit them now too.

I've only got a 10 and a 30. Both are great. I have heard of people having feeding problems with modified AUG mags.

If you have a MSAR rifle without the manual bolt close feature, the rifle will work fine with unmodified Steyr AUG mags...

At least that's what MSAR is advertising...

the Beta C aug drum i have coming in is unmodified.

according to both Ratworx and MSAR the design will fit without any modifications providing it is the new model, ie. no forward assist.

the MSAR works great with the AUG mags. I only own the 10 rounders from MSAR. I prefer the original "green" color of the aug mags. My mags do "not" require modification either.

I was under the impression that the springs for the OEM mags were not so hot.

as far as the spring go, they are a little softer but no problems. if they work in a full auto AUG, why not a semi clone ? no issues to report with AUG mags

Hi Guys
Just a thought but would they fit a 40rnd AK mag pouch?

I have been looking at one of these and fighting the earge to buy it. How hard is it to find parts and mags? From the artical on AR15.com sounds like the accuracy is there.

Thanks

Got mine from CDNN for about $19, but they've been out of stock for over a year. You can still find Colt-marked bayonets for about $50 in SGN...

TUFF makes 5 & 8 Mag Pouches - called 5 In Line & 8 In Line.

I have the 8 In Line for 1911 Mags & the 5 In Line for FAL Mags - great product/slick design.

They make them for AK Mags, AR Mags, Single Stack Pistol Mags, Double Stack Pistol Mags, and AR10/FAL 20 Round Mags!!!

I would bet the MSAR or Steyr Aug Mags would fit in the AK Pouch - call Tuff and ask.

CDNN advertises that the MSAR STG556 mags will NOT fit the AUG...

For what it's worth...

By the way, I realize that I should have stated this somewhat differently.

CDNN advertises that the MSAR STG556 mags that they are currently selling will NOT fit the AUG...

My understanding is that Steyr AUG mags will not fit the early MSAR rifles (the ones with the bolt-assists), but that the later rifles without the bolt assist will take AUG mags...

That's what I've heard anyways...

I use AUG mags in my MSAR (about 2 years old, non forward assist type). They work fine but sometimes they don't hold open on the last round. Factory MSAR mags hold open on the last round every time. There are some minor differences between the two at the back of the feed lips and the stabilizing bump (much larger on the MSAR mag) at the front about a 1/4" down from the feed lips.

MSAR mags are also slightly narrower at the feed lips and the locking ledge is slightly wider than the AUG mag. Front lower notch (2 inches below the hump) at the front is wider on the AUG mag too.
