medallion cut L1A1 buttstock

I've seen these before but I cant for the life of me remember what's the story behind the medallion hole?

Thanks nog. Anyone have a picture of what the disk looks like? I didnt see anything in stevens or skennerton, but possibly could have overlooked it.

The l1a1's that the new zealand royal airforce used had the cut and a medallion inside the cut. A member here has a clone.
