Guys,
Forgot to mop out my Rock Island Armory 1911 barrel now it looks like hell all up in thar. Doesn't seem to make much sense to put a $200 barrel into a $350 pistol. So where might I find a barrel for a decent price?
I remember Sportsmans Guide selling supposed USGI chrome lined 1911 barrels for something like $40 several years ago. Should have bought a dozen of them.

I think Sarco usually has them cheap.

I have not shot my Sarco barrel, but I don't plan on using it as it looks to be of a much lower quality than say a Springfield.

I bought a chrome lined, '80's manufacture, USGI chrome lined barrel from Sarco several years ago. It's of very good quality.

What does the price of the gun have to do with the cost of the barrel? If a guy charged you $1,100.00 for the pistol would you feel better? And again, supose you bought a Colt Series 70 for $300.00 would you feel the same way about putting a good barrel in it??
My advise is to go to Brownells and buy yourself a good, barrel,,, and take care of it.

I have used Storm Lake barrels from Brownells and found them to be a good buy for the money. Last 1911 I fit one with shot 1.75" at 25 yards off the rest. Be sure your bushing is tight on the barrel or replace it.Ron

If I can buy a pistol for $350 I figure there must be barrels available for less than $200. And it turns out there are. Armscor will sell me a barrel for under $40. That was my point. I'm perfectly happy with how the original barrel performed so the extra $160 for something with "match grade" stamped on the box adds no value to me. The pistol still wears the tiny GI style sights but it shot minute-of-bird-house accurate right out of the box.

So if you bought a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup, or a Smith 41 for $350.00 you would still treat it like crap???
Actually, the accuracy of the barrel is more in the fitting than anything else. A Poorly fitted match barrel will not shoot any better than a poorly made barrel. The benefit of getting a barrel from Brownells is the fact that most are stainless steel.

You sure that old barrel is toast ? I've fired some pretty rank 1911's that still grouped amazingly well.
But, for only $40, a new barrel and peace of mind works too! :D

With today noncorosive ammunition, I am really surprised that you have ruined a barrel. What were you shooting in it?

Are you trying to be a dick or does it flow naturally? How about you spot me $200 and I'll get that Brownells barrel. If I had a Series 70 and could spend $40 to get accuracy acceptable for my purposes I would indeed treat it like crap by installing a $40 barrel. You would disapprove and I would not give a damn. My barrel is shitty because of my carelessness, not because of the price I paid for the pistol. How I correct it is a matter of practicality. My Albanian "shooter grade" $90 SKS will not be rebarreled with a Krieger, either.
The barrel isn't "toast", it still shoots fine despite the nasty bore. But this pistol was a gift to my father so I'm making it right. He'd call me a fool to put a $200 barrel in it and I'd agree. We were shooting some commercial ammo, probably winchester white box because that's what wal mart sells for cheap.

Not all Browell Barrels are $200.00. And if your father would call you a fool for putting a high quality barrel in your pistol, one that would not be riuned by firing a box of ammunition through it, then I guess you two deserve each other.
I must admit that I am proud of the fact that I treat my pistols much better than you treat yours, and if that makes me a dick then so be it.
