Compliance to what bill? You know you can rethread now right?

DougW
February 28, 2009, 10:07
My L1A1 was built in the early years of the Clinton era Crime Bill (AKA Slime Bill). Yes, I know it can be rethreaded, but I don't want to disassemble the rifle to PROPERLY thread the barel for a FH. It was a PITA to time the barrel the first time. It works fine as it is for me.

Eden Import receiver Australian L1A1 SLR, sn. AD64222xx, from a New Zealand production contract. All serials match. The wood has never been sanded or oiled and still smells of the original creosote treatment! This is a minty rifle that I was fortunate to be able to purchase when it came onto the market recently.

The carry handle is NZ pattern. All of the accessories shown are original Australian. Cleaning thong and oiler reside in the butt trap.

Was your question directed at me?

I applied nothing to my carry handle, its the original finish, was NOS when I put it on and ive since replaced it with an original wood non-rotating handle.
The sling is a standard WW2 issue Lee Enfield sling.
Thats how the SLRs were issued in New Zealand.
Those slings are everywhere in NZ.

Is it still in 7.62 NATO? I thought civilian ownership of military calibers was not allowed in Italy?

The Australian handguard design changed around 1968. Pre-1968 was solid wood of the "two slots & nose under the gas block" style; from 1968 on it was laminated wood of the "three holes and no nose" style.

So far as I know the British stayed with the two-slots design of handguard until they started using the reinforced nylon furniture in the 1970s.

Yes it's a 7,62 NATO.
We do not have restriction for .223/5.56 ,45ACP, .338... too.
The only restricted caliber here is the 9x19 ( yes it makes no sense) that has been replaced for the civilian market by the 9x21 which has just the same properties

Not perfectly done, tho better than the beaver crew's work!
Barrel was "overtimed", et cetera.
NGL Imbel upper, cut for inch charging handle, metric mags

I am not a purist when it comes to my own shooters, as safe queens just sit and may as well be canoe paddles in my little slice of Heaven.

I did mod the grip with more ' fill ' to the palm of the hand a'la 1911A1

The angry beaver barrel was slotted and RH thread under the pinned and welded ear gethumper

The rear sight has been modded for a smaller aperture, also

Thanks again to SloCat for the Carry Handle slot filler!

Would this technically have been a "B*tch Gun" then? Or was it nothing more than a stock SLR cut down to size?

Unsure of the term, but I've heard this called a "break" gun as in "Break Engagement", it had the L2A1 full auto parts installed. So I think it may have been built up or could be a cut down L1A1 with the extras added.

Sounds much like what I've seen referred to by the Australian forces in Vietnam as a "B*tch Gun"...L1A1 with the barrel cut down short of the gas block, and full auto parts installed. I know that some also had the American XM148 grenade launcher installed under the barrel, but I don't know if that was true of all "B*tch Guns". (I have also heard the "Break Gun" term used.)

*****See http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3630801&postcount=1 for kit pre build ****

Sorry for the excess of photos!

Finally got my Aussie L1A1 'SLR' or 'Gat' built on a DSA Australian pattern cut receiver. I've kept all the US made compliance parts pretty much internal (gas piston, H/T/S, receiver, mag followers, mag floor plates. Wood is SLAZ 63 Handguards, MA 83 pistol grip, MA 69 N buttstock, and the Type 2 wood carry handle, rotating - is a hacked Brit wood handle that I shaped and stained to look right.

I shipped it of to gunplumber and had him manganese phosphate parkerize it first, and then apply Metacol III Classic patina to make it look like aged park, and I couldn't be happier. It's almost a dead nuts on match to the original finish on my NOS matching bayonet, and matches perfectly with the original parked components I sent with the kit.

Thanks! Pretty damn chuffed by her. She shoots brilliantly. Have only had the one outing to a range with 50 and 100yd targets. I'm still working on getting the 200m zero. Gotta love mixing metric and imperial (measurements for zeroing)......:whistling:

Buttstock was also NOS. Bought from a member here actually who had a bunch of them. Dark part on the stock came up when I was hand running BLO. Handguards were also very lightly used and almost NOS bought off GB from the same gent I bought the kit and receiver from. The handguards have a couple of compression marks but thats it.

Matell,
Very nice rifles, and some great pics as well.
Thanks for sharing your collection and knowledge with us. I am new to FAL's, but certainly not new to guns. I have collected various milsurps over the years, I really like my own Litgow No.1 MK.3, now I just need an FAL to go with it.

Yes that's true. It happened with M1A's, AR's, Garands, and AK's.
I have been thinning down the heard locally in Indy. So now I have some spare cash to get an FAL.
I came here to learn about them before plunking down the cash.

You can put the pin back in and make the hold open function. Simply copy a metric for the correct length pin.

If the BHO already has the empty hole (as seems to be true with a lot of Lithgow BHOs), you can convert them with an appropriate length roll pin.

Yes. Sighted it in at 100 yds, erring on the high side of POA. About 3" groups, and ability to hit a 3" polymer bobble. Ammo was SA surplus. Going to try the ZQI stuff this weekend.

Bayonet also arrived. (Photo thread needs a photo, I suppose)

My guess is you could shrink those groups once you "settle down" with the weapon after firing it a few times, and try some different ammo.

Please keep us updated. With more pics, of course :)

Afternoon all,

Thought I would share the latest rebuild out of my workshop, its yet another NZ contract Lithgow AD64, deactivated again (deactivated 20 years ago), but at least it's now a pretty deac!

It came to me as a box of bits, so I had a rummage about in my spares box, repainted her and fitted a set of restored woodwork...

Happy with the result.

Good morning from Finland,

bought my one and only FAL/L1A1-family rifle back in 2001 when a shipment of a few hundred Lithgow-built rifles popped in to the local civilian gun market. The rifles were rated by the seller from fair to excellent condition which affected pricing of an individual rifle, mine was rated "good", something in between fair and excellent. I paid for this rifle with an inch pattern 20 round magazine less than US$200, the excellent ones would have been about US$250-300. Note: this is the inflation adjusted value of the money I spent in 2001...

Contrary to my previous post the rifle is made in 1968 (not 1967) and to the best of my knowledge (i.e. serial number AD6809506) it was shipped to Singapore, alas it doesn't have any Singaporean markings I've seen on for example Singaporean police force issued weapons.

The rifle looks like it has been carried along quite a lot in a drill field, plus it has got the obligatory armory-induced dings and dents, but the bore is impeccable and its internal parts fit to each other almost like components on a hand made Swiss pocket watch. The trigger breaks at about 1,5 kilos (3.3 lbs) and after slight and careful polishing doesn't have any noticeable creep.

The rifle is a decent shot, 10 shot groups hang around 2,5-3 MOA depending on the batch of NATO surplus ammo.

Here it is in the early morning sunlight. The rifle is, excluding touch of an enhancement on the trigger group, unmodified and the furniture is all original, I do though occasionally apply some gun stock oil and wax for protection against harsh Finnish elements.

(*) Correcting myself, this date code deciphers as: ZC 4, April 1997

Please excuse my ongoing monologue, I don't know if this was common knowledge but to me this is all new and exiting :) At the time I bought this rifle there wasn't so much info readily available online like it is today, although one has to be a little suspicious and cross check, good example is BNP stamp of which there are even today people with 100% certainty it stands for "British Nitro Proof"...

Kidnapped Dad's neutered, ban-era L1A1 in plastic furniture. Sent to Randy Kline to make the barrel evil. Just installed the wood furniture. Missing a sling swivel, so it's got no buttplate in place, but it's good enough to present on Christmas.

And, a curse on whoever designed the return spring nut contraption. I almost hit my cleaning lady with it as it flew across the room, and I ruined my favorite shorts, which are now covered in black grease.

I have been getting back into FALs as of late, digging through my old kits and discovered two PNG contract kits, unique flash hiders and shorter buttstocks included. The barrels are demilled and I was hoping that there are still Aussi barrels around. I think I used to have 3 kits as I found a third PNG flash hider. May have built one of my old commanding officers an L1A1 and didn't utilize the fh in the build. My squadron always gave the retiring CO a rifle or 1911 as a thank you gift. Anyone out there have an Aussi barrel or two they could part with? Also just found a wood and pressed steel folding bipod for the heavy barreled L1A1. L2A1? So what are the chances of finding a HB gas block or complete barrel to fit this folding bipod to for a hb builde? Anyone have one they are looking to sell? Pictures are on the way.

I forgot to ask in my last post and I do not presently have a new receiver to test with...so, can an Indian barrel be used to on a British/Inch receiver? I found 3 Indian barrels in my Fal stash and was hoping to put them to use on a build. I think these came from FAC when they closed out. Any thoughts on this?

Is this a Aussie or British L1A1?

Hi all,
I have been reading a lot on here but this is my first post. I am from New Zealand and an AD61 & AD63 Lithgow L1A1.
One still has to have its rear site fitted, and a carry handle needs to be found. Both a reasonable shooters and make a nice change from the AR's...

Thanks guys,
I'm looking at getting the bottom one refinished to look like new.
The top one may follow, even though I love the new look, you loose a little bit of this history in changing them.
But I guess over their lives they have changed anyway, as the key parts are all correctly numbered, but the upper one has wood from 1973, and the bottom also from different years.

Top one has its rear sight fitted now... just need to get a front site set screw to finish it off.

Agree. Those have that classic off-the-arms-rack look (as opposed to the BFPU look).

Those are some great rifles, welcome to the Files. Love your country, best place I've visited. Spent a week driving around the North island on the wrong side of the road shifting with the wrong hand. Look forward to exploring the south island at some point.

Yeh, you lot have made me reconsider the re-finishing. I like the original look to, probably why I've kept putting it off.

@mack1611, I know the feeling. When I travel to the US, it takes my brain a little to switch over to LH drive... so I know what its like for you here in NZ...
