How do you remove the thumb saftey on a 1911 pistol?Mainly wondering how far down you have to disassemble the pistol to remove and install a new saftey.
Any help is appreciated, thankyou in advance.

Just turn it to about 1/2 way on and pull it out. your new safety will probably need A bit if fittin.

Some nice pics here (http://how-i-did-it.org/detail-1911/frame_detail.html) - apart from the grips, the safety is the first thing to come off the frame when stripping it down, so you don't need to do much.
Bear in mind that a new safety may need a gentle touch with a fine file to fit.

it may need more than a gentle touch ... it will need fitting ... go slowly and be sure your working on the right spot !! ... if it's new it should have a diagram w/pics on where to take off the metal ... again, go slowly ... it's a lot easier to take it off than put it back on ...
some say cock the hammer fully - some say about halfway - I find it's a little diff. on ea pistol ... as far as removal from frame ...
