I was wondering what sort of ammo do you guys put through your Garands? I'm looking for something that is powerful enough to work the action but not warp the op rod which I'm having to replace  .

Thanks!

The absolute best .30-06 around.

Danish. :)

Now try to find a case of that now.

Tell me about it man. I had some Greek but was stupid and didn't stock up on it! I've spent the morning trying everything I can think of to come up with some surplus 06 ammo, trust me, there is little out there and what's out there people are selling for ungodly sums of money for an enbloc full...

+1 for Jim Swartz! He is THE man for op rod repair.

Also +1 for the Greek HXP ammo. Get it from the CMP (http://www.thecmp.org/ammosales.htm) while they still have some. If you're not already a member of an affiliated club, you can join the GCA (http://www.thegca.org/) for $25.

Danish is top notch accuracy wise but corrosive and bedan primed. Greek is very accurate in several M1s (but not so much in a couple of bolt guns) and reloadable. Even if you don't reload you could sell your Greek brass for a couple of bucks.

I have over 1800 rounds of Danish and have previously fired several hundred rounds of it. None of it was corrosively primed.

Its not corrosize? I guess I was just worried over the date. Danish is nice ammo but I only have one bandoleer left and cannot bring myself to shoot it.

Have to agree with Bill this time. The Danish I have and have shot is not corrosive.

Agree. Danish is berdan primed, but non-corrosive. Also good stuff.

I agree...

The Danish ammo is top notch...

Then again, that was then and this is now, and the Danish is not readily available...

The Greek still is, and it's great ammo to boot...

Get some now or be without...:)

I have shot the Korean corrosive, Korean non-corrosive (good stuff), Danish, FN and Greek from CMP. I really like all of it. Never had a problem with the corrosive, I just windexed the barrel and bolt when finished firing and cleaned upon arriving home.
The CMP is now sending out older Greek from the '60's so they may be getting on down into the pile. Wonder how much they have left?

I remember shooting the monthly Garand match at 3 Points in Tucson between 2001-2003, and winning it frequently, with the Danish ammo. For $10 you got 64 rounds of Danish in clips and bandoliers, and that included the match fee!

dabtl has 6 cases of Danish in his office that he stares at every day. That's about the only good thing I can say about him..

Here's a lesson learned about ammo: when the Danish 30-06 and 9mm were both widely available and CHEAP, I only bought 2 bandos of the M2 and 5 boxes of the 9mm. My plan was to test them to see how well they worked in my guns. By the time I got around to doing so and wanted more, there was no more to be had. Very sad.

The lesson: by all means, test ammo before stocking up! But don't wait 8 months between the initial purchase and the test!

I just finished a rear-lugged garand with a std contour match barrel and have been so impressed with the greek ammo that I haven't found a need to break out the more expensive stuff.

OK Bill, I found a couple of cases in the garage. Still have these and another 1280 rnds in boxes. Shoulda woulda coulda bought more. But, I did score a bunch of Danish Garands, including several that had gone through Danish rebuilds and placed in storage. Beautiful new park, new internals, new USGI and Danish barrels, small parts and the equal of any arsenal rebuild ever done by SA. I have one of the SA rebuilds.

The ammo case number indicates the ammo you have has been found to cause cancer. You must get rid of it immediately. I can have a collection truck at your door almost immediately to save you from the long term effects. He is from United People Savers, in the official brown truck, you simply hand him the ammo and it will be transported to a safe location for disposition. Do this immediately!

i loved the surplus FN 52 30.06 ammo i bought in 99. it was great. i bought a 700 round case,, and later 600 rounds in 100 rd boxes. accuracy was better than i was .
many said it was corrosive, but i never had any problems.
i missed out on all that excellent danish waiting to hear how good it was.
like the greek ammo, prices doubled when word got out how good both were.
when i ran outta surplus i bought handloads from a fellow club member. he said he liked to use once fired brass in his guns, but i thnk he was doing me a favor as he only charged me 20 bucks per 100 rds. i bought alota ammo for use in my club matches from him.
i'll have to dig out the load card. he was good about labeling all his loads. it was very accurate stuff....

a query for Heat.... in your pic of the ammo in the clips, do you have trouble loading your rifle with the top round on the left?? it says in most books to load the top on the right. i find thst works best for me... just curios...

Teddydog

The rifle doesn't care which side the "high" round is on. Clips are loaded that way to make it easier on the shooter. Most of the time you use your right hand to load the clip and having the high round closer to your thumb gives you a better push.

i've put over 3,000 rds thru mine in matches. with the exception of slow fire, 22 rds in 20 minutes, and 2 then 8 in rapid i always loaded my clips with the top rd on the 'right'... maybe tat being partialy paralyzed has weaked me more than i thought, but pushing a clip during rapid firie was had enough, i didn't want to add to it....

I've never had a problem..I shoot right handed yet I am dominant left handed and dominant right eyed so I am a mess anyways..maybe in all the confusion I just dont notice:?

The CMP still has plenty of the Greek ammo available and Lake City (delinked machine gun ball) on hand. The Greek ammo shoots very well out of the rack grade H&R that came home from the South Store. I have not shot any of the L.C. yet.
