I have an FAL kit to build in the next couple of weeks. I have a receiver wrench, but not a formal barrel vice.

I've seen the build-your-own info on Gunthings and it looks pretty straightforward. However, for just 1 build, I'm wondering if it is really needed. I have a heavy machinists vice and some pure lead "cable sheathing". I've seen tutorials that use a regular vice on the barrel flats, but that seems less than ideal. My vice has pipe-holding jaws under the flat jaws. Anyone used these for barrel holding? Padded with the lead sheathing, will these give enough hold for a barrel install?

Thanks.

Rob

I used a big vice just make sure the jaws are clean and square.
I also put the receiver wrench inthe vide and I have an old wrench from a reactor that is a perfect fit on the barrel flats and I use it with a pipe to extend it
there is no size on the wrench I have but its tight on the barrel

Don't do anything rash,,,,,,you could barrow or rent (six pack) one depending on location.

Post where you are, Someone may be in your area and let you borrow one or come by and help you do it. I made my barrel vise from the gunthings site. Worked for me. I did have to put some rosin on it tho.

I'm in need of a barrel vise too but no one here in the upstate SC area has one. I did make up a wrench like whats shown on the WECSOG (http://www.sixgunsworld.com/wecsog/fal/carbine/) site but need to figure how to hold the receiver.

If you made a wrench, perhaps you could make the barrel vise as well - there's a plan on Gunthings.com 's page here (http://www.gunthings.com/vise.htm)

I got it together yesterday with the help of a friend and his shop. Thanks for the offer XHardrock, It was suprisingly easier than i thought it would be.
