View Full Version : SKS in 5.45X39mm? 6.5 Grendel?

Has anybody here tried this conversion?

I picked up a junker SKS at a gun show for $100 just for the machined trigger guard. This rifle is missing the gas piston, operating rod, and magazine. The bore looked kinda ratty as well.

So I was thinking that as long as I have to replace the gas system parts anyway I could get US made parts, a US made stock/handguard set, and make it 922 compliant so I can run it on high-cap mags.

If I am going to all that trouble I may as well re-barrel it to have a good bore to shoot through - so why not go for a different caliber?

So I can stick with the same bolt face and extractor I'd stick with rounds with the same base - which points to either 5.45X39mm or 6.5 Grendel. (Not sure if the Grendel feeds through AK-74 mags?)

Any experience/ideas on this?

545 and 762 boltfaces are different.

Okay...

Well, I would probably have to do some work on the bolt to run it on magazines other than the original SKS fixed 10 rounder. As long as I would be milling a bit off the sides of the lower half I guess I could do something to the boltface to shrink the diameter on that.

So has anybody here done a caliber conversion to an SKS?

I would have to think the grendel would be the better option. maybe even the 6.8 hard to say without knowing the rim diameters.

It sounds like an interesting project to me.
According to a couple internet searches I just did, the 6.5 Grendel evolved from the 6 mm PPC which in turn came from the .220 Russian cartridge. The 7.62 x 39 shares the same .445 dimension at the base.
The max. overall length of the 7.62 x 39 is slightly shorter at 2.193 versus 2.255 for the Grendel. That doesn't sound like much, but may prove critical to getting correct pressures and decent accuracy from the rifle.

Is your SKS one with a pinned or screwed in barrel ? I don't think i would bother with a pinned version. Especially what you would need to spend for a barrel and machine work.

.50 Beowulf? It's got the same rim size as 7.62x39...

Also, it feeds in AR mags, so by the logic of 5.45 working in AR mags, .50 Beowulf might work in AK-74 mags...

Always thought it would be cool to have a SKS in .223 that fed from a fixed 10 round mag and used AR stripper clips to load....
