I saw an ad on http://www.thedealershowroom.com/page/page/1667325.htm, selling BM 59 re-weld receivers. Are they worth fooling with or are they junk? Thanks, Greek.

$150 for a BM59 is attractive!! I wonder how much cleanup there is to do? Sarco for a parts kit and off to the smith for a build...

That's what I was thinking. The welds appear to be solid and heat treating may not be an issue if they utilized the long front halfs.

Does anyone have a link to the Sarco ad for bm 59 parts kit? Would you have to have this reciever shipped to a FFL since it is only 80%? Thanks

The Sarco kits are BM59SL - basicly a Garand with a modified barrel and op rod, and the cut receiver. Click here (http://www.sarcoinc.com/11-1-08.pdf) and scroll down to page 5. There is a 'standard' BM59 kit here (http://www.sarcoinc.com/11-20-08.pdf) on page one listed as 'Unique'.
You might be better off getting parts from Reese Surplus (http://www.reesesurplus.com/) who bought out Beretta's parts (associated with SA, Inc.).

They look interesting but if I were planning to use one in a build I would want to have someone like SEI or even a metallurgical lab take a look at it for hardness, micro-fractures etc. I would think at the minimum a heat treatment would be in order. Honestly though it I were to build a rifle from one of those receivers every time I fired I would be half expecting it to go boom. I think if it were me and I wanted a cheap M14/M1 I would just buy a garand from CMP while they still have them or get a barreled M1 action from CMP. Just my opinion of course.

Also it could be my ignorance of the beretta design but doesn't this receiver have the lug to mount the FA parts? Would this be legal?

Junk

Golden State was using rewelded M1 Garand receivers assembled with BM 59 parts. Right not the parts would be desirable but CMP has released a lot of M1 receivers that are not rewelds so why fool with this?

Dealershowroom doesn't have 80% BM59 receivers. They had ONE 80% BM59 receiver that they offered up on Sturmgewehr about six months ago. Sold instantly. My "I will take it" came in a few minutes too late. That one receiver is still pictured on their website, but notice that you cannot buy it. It's gone.

There's really nothing wrong with a reweld if done properly and the basic demilled receiver is OK to start with. Rewelds got a bad reputation back when people were welding up burned, damaged and worn out scrap receivers(which were demilled because they were junk in the first place). Lots of demils out there now are new/unfired rifles that were cut up. The weld isn't in a critical area. I know of dozens of reweld M14's that have been running F/A for decades without a problem. Lots of reweld Garands(and BM59's)are 40yrs old now and going strong.
