View Full Version : pivot pin or take-down pin

I have a metric FAL built on an IMBEL gear receiver with a metric lower. Does anyone know of a legitimate reason the pivot or take-down pin would be installed from the wrong direction? Does anyone know how to remove it without destroying the pin? Thanks in advance for your time.

Just to be clear, you're talking about the pin that attaches the lower to the upper, right? If so, it doesn't matter which way the pin goes in. To remove, unscrew the one side and use a bullet (read: part of a cartridge) or similarly shaped punch to push the female end out.

Yes, that is the part I'm asking about. It appears the threads are stripped because nothing happens. I have tried squeezing the slotted end together as I try to unscrew it (no small task). Still, nothing happens.

I believe if the threads were stripped you would not be able to tighten the pivot pin. Unscrewing the pivot should not be a problem.
Make sure you push the split end of the retaining pivot in with your thumb (or tap it with a brass hammer) as you turn the butt end with a screwdriver or a coin. You don't need to squeeze the split retaining pivot.

The retaining pivot once unscrewed will feel like it is stripped when it is free of the exterior pivot butt threads, and it may be necessary to tap the split end of the retaining pivot with a small flat drift. (punch)

Sometimes, the female end may rotate along with the male end, so hold that end down with your finger.

One way I have found to remove hinge pins is to only slightly loosen the pin by unscrewing it a few turns then slapping the female end with your hand.....which causes the male end to poke out of the receiver. Then continue to unscrew the female end. When you get it out, you will find the male is sticking out enough that you can grab it and pull it the rest of the way out.

Good Luck!!

I've been gone a couple days. I CAN'T tighten or loosen then screw. The female end turns with the slotted end. I have tried holding down on it, holding against it, and even trying to wedge different thickness objects between the female end and the receiver to hold it while I turn the screw. I think maybe somebody used loc-tite or even crossthreaded it.

If the threads are damaged, or Loctited then maybe gripping one end with a wrench while turning the other with a BIG, strong screwdriver with a cheater bar might break the seal?

Failing that if you apply steady pressure (a lot of it) to the split end while holding the "nut" so it won't turn, while turning the "bolt" you can probably wrench that thing out of there. I don't think spreading, or compressing the split itself is going to help.

Jamming stuff between the reciever & head probably isn't applying enough resistance, but a vice-grip, or similar tool might.

The problem I'm having with pliers or vicegrips is that the nut is round and not enough of it protrudes to get a good lock onto, but thanks for the idea

KROIL it!!

OK, PB Blaster works too.

Maybe, Liquid Wrench? :D

How about one of those bendy universal jointed plumbers wrenches that goes up behind the sink?

Just to over-clarify.
The wrench #1 goes on the outside of the big outside "nut", not the split shaft end.
The other goes on the other side of the rifle at the other end of the shaft.

What dissolves Loctite? I don't remember.

Heat it that usually brakes loctite.
Thanks D.

Needle nose vise grips. Put a 100 watt bulb in a work light reflector right down on it for a couple hours first. If this defeats you, you ain't using your noggin. Concentrate, focus power!

Super Glue
Clean the pin with acetone. Use the gel type and glue a large nut to the unslotted side. Use plenty of glue but keep it out of the hole and off of the receiver (don't make it worse).
Give the glue a day to cure, now you have something to hold on to when you try to unscrew the pin. when you have it apart tap the side of the nut with a hammer, super glue is brittle, and the nut will pop off.
Drop the piece in a jar of acetone until the residue is disolved.

hehe ...
what about some butane ??freeze crap out of it and use your wedge method .......maybe it will get "shattered" ..like mick jagger on 7th avenue ...(he couldnt give it away ..hehe)

suppose if all else fails ...you could take the calipers and layout center on the pin haid .....c-punch it and using the correct drill (same OD as the shaft on the pin ) take out the center of the pin ...should come out then ...correct me if im wrong guys ....im a little tired

of course youll need a new pin after ..but they arent much $$.. ....
