Mossberg barrel compatability

Will a 500 barrel work with a 590a1? want to buy a slug barrel for my shotty.

Yes, they will as long as the 500 barrel was for the 8 shot 500 series.

There are 5-6 and 8-9 shot barrels for the basic 500 series- 590 and 590a1 use the 8-9 shot barrel.

The difference is in the lockup of the barrel to the magazine tube; the 590/500 8-9shot ones slide over the tube and have a locking magazine cap at the end of the tube and the 5-6 shot 500 series lock at the end of the ring that holds the barrel to the mag tube.

FYI- you can also fit a lower cap mag tube and barrel onto a 590 receiver if you want to. Just need both the lower cap tube and lower cap style barrel- can't interchange capacity tubes and barrels due to the linkage issue cited above.

The nice part is that unlike some remingtons the m500/590 tube isn't welded/soldered in; you can just unscrew it, sometimes with a strap wrench if it's being silly.

Just make sure that when you put the mag tube back on that you have it in the right way- I always thought that they were the same on either end but when I had my 590 vang comp'd I was informed otherwise. Still seems the same to me but what do I know.

500 and 590 bbl do not mount the same 590 has a screw on cap 500 screws into the mag tube

The barrels can be swapped, but you have to change the magazine tubes in order to do it.
